An addictive sandbox style RPG.

User Rating: 8 | The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - Game of the Year Edition XBOX
Elder Scrolls III was the first sandbox style RPG I've played and it was a very addictive and a fulfilling experience.

Elder Scrolls III(which I'll refer to as ESIII) allows you to freely explore big open environments and when you travel through the forest you won't be restricted to a narrow path like in many other RPGs because you'll be able to explore to go anywhere in the forest you want and you can even get lost in the forest. You can interact with the people in the world by talking to them and they have a lot to say even though most of it is recycled dialogue with a few words changed or you can kill them and steal their belongings. When you enter a store you can choose choose to steal expensive weapons/armor(but the angry store owner will try to kill you if you do).You can enter the house of any person and you can steal their possesions.

The world is so huge you could explore it for hours and you can find caves to explore and there's lots of towns to visit and there's nice natural scenery to see when you're travelling through the world.

The game makes you create a character and you can choose their race, class and give them a name name.As you would expect, different races and classes have different advantages/disadvantages.If you play as a reptilian humanoid, you'll be immune to certain diseases and spells and can breathe under-water and swim fast(which is helpful when you're trying to escape from enemies).Human classes have better physical strength, defensive stats.Elves are good magic users and archers.Your class will affect how you can perform certain abilities such as picking lots or how well you can use certain weapons and spells.

The enemies you'll experience can be wild animals, giant beasts and mythological creatures, ghosts, guards who are chasing you before they know you commited a crime etc.

The combat uses a real-time system that allows you to attack and block whenever you want. You can be very defensive and stay in a defensive stance for most of a battle and swing your weapon when you think an enemy isn't going to try to attack or you swing your weapon wildly and heal afterwards(you can rest anywhere to heal your character). For 2003 standards, the battle system in Morrowind is quite good even though it feels clunky and repetitive by today's standards. The exploration elements sometimes feel bogged down by clunky platforming elements(yes, you'll need to do platform jumps in some areas and it feels horrible). The quests feel dull too they involve things such as meeting a certain person or finding a certain object and I especially hated the fetch quests because the object you're searching for could be hidden in a place where there's many passages and rooms and I got bored trying to find my way through all the passages and searching many rooms for 1 object and then having to do it again later on.The story and characters are dull but WRPGs before or around the time ESIII was released usually didn't focus much on story.

To level up your character, you will need to do something that relates to a particular skill. For example, jumping will increase your agility, running will increase stamina, using a blunt weapon will level up blunt weapon combat skills. When the skills get levelled up your charater's overall level will increase and it will upgrade certain character stats such as strength, defense etc.

If this game didn't have sandbox elements it would be a very boring RPG.Also, the loading times for the games are ridiclously long.

The world has a nice, darker atmosphere. It looks beautiful in a dark, abstract type of way.It has unique, almost alien-looking vegetation and I like how some of the vegetation looks like giant mushrooms and I like the water effects for lakes. There's areas with thick forest and I like you can come across an issolated cottage that has a farm next to it and there's villages to explore.

The facial animation of characters/NPCs look blocky when they talk and the animation of guards who are chasing you looks jerky and horrible.

Overall,ESIII is a great sandbox game but as an RPG it's average but exploring it's large and atmospheric world is very addictive.
