No better "sniffing" dog adventure game than this.

User Rating: 8 | The Dog Island: Hitotsuno no Hana no Monogatari PS2
This is an adventure game where you choose a type of dog breed and gender, and continue through the story.

GAMEPLAY:
The gameplay is great for an adventure game. Your main and most important ability is sniffing. You will have the ability to hunt certain food such as fruits, vegetables, bugs, fishes, and flowers. But these will be just for collection and fun because they could not be eaten. There are numerous side quests, which you can take at any order, so expect lots of backtracking during the course of the game.

You will receive letters from friends and family members from afar, and they can request you to send them certain items via mail. There is also the ability to customize your puppy's appearance by equipping purchased items. You will be able to rest to regenerate your life. All enemies are easy to deal with, all you have to do is to stealthily approach them from their rear side, then bark at them. There are shifts from day to night, and these are the only times when you can find the certain bug you have been looking for. You won't get lost in the game especially in backtracks because you can review your current tasks in your diary.

STORY:
The story starts (and is actually) plain simple, but appears complex due to the numerous quests which should are accomplished in order to advance through the game. The main point in this game is that you will have to pass through a lot of obstacles before reaching your goal.

CHARACTERS:
Most characters in the game are puny to make them look like popular adorable stuffed toys. You will meet different breeds of dogs in towns, and can openly talk to them. Almost all puppies you will meet along the way will have a task request for you later on as you go along the game.

GRAPHICS:
The graphics are "kiddy style" as you would expect, but is very smooth. Resolution is good; you could clearly notice the small beetle clamped in a tree. The stages look very good, especially at the Dry Valley. As for the menu interface, the graphics are even better.

SOUND:
There are no humans in this game, so all you will hear are barks and howls, but with subtitles of course. The background music is relaxing, and is permanent in that certain stage or area. Other gameplay sound effects are just OK. At times though, you may be annoyed by the constant and repetitive barks and howls while reading the subtitles.

OVERALL:
It may look "kiddy", but a kid would be hard up to accomplish numerous quests. If you want a nonviolent game where there is unlimited hunting of various foods, backtracking, and completing numerous quests, then you should definitely get this game. It's quite good once in a while to play a game where you will have to go through lots of long numerous quests to achieve a single goal, not for yourself, but for someone most important to you.
