Gah so close! (the ambivalent fan)

User Rating: 8 | The Amazing Spider-Man PC

Just to clarify, I am a hardcore Spidey fan. I loved Spiderman 2, the game (and movie). Amazing Spider-man was going to be a hit or miss and I knew it before hand. When the movie came out, I had mixed feelings, but overall, it was pretty positive. I even rewatched it a second time in preparation for this game because I heard it was a continuation.

And then the verdict. Well, essentially, the game is a mixed bag. The lingering feeling is that it was pretty fun and good, but..just..rather lacking in certain areas. As a whole, it was slightly disappointing. I'll go into the specifics.

For starters, the graphics. Spiderman looks better than ever, and graphics really shine with his suit design and web swinging action. It doesn't..however, have Spiderman 2's charm. The city looks dull; I can't really explain it any other way. I know they always have been 'dull' in the technical sense, but usually an illusion is created to at least 'make' it feel real. Sleeping Dogs does a 'great' job of doing this; Spiderman 2 even, with its massive skyscrapers and expansive lands/diverse webslinging upgrades/etc. With Amazing Spider-man, as much as I wanted to deny it, it felt like you were swinging alongside cardboard boxes for buildings...

The side-missions also left much to be desired. There's a loading screen inbetween each one...which really breaks the immersion. Also, they're super repetitive; the only ones that are really fun are the helicopter missions because those are actually somewhat variable, in terms of your tactical approach. The others though (like rescuing patients and car chases) are incredibly boring after 1-2 plays.

You may be wondering why the score I gave was positive at all. Well, the thing is, the game wasn't a complete tank. For one, the voice-acting/boss battles are great. Also, even though the battle system is far from the grace of Arkham Asylum, you can kind of 'force push it'. In other words, you garner what you want from it. I turned up the difficulty to max and mastered the use of web-retreat/stealth/web rush/ and combos to make everything look cooler. Problem is, if you aren't devoted (as me), you'll end up having just a clunky fighter that ends up being much less satisfying than Spiderman 2.

The story wasn't bad either; I rather enjoyed the ambiance and its attempt at making it feel like a movie. I also really liked how they stayed true to the Spiderman lore (well, you know, as a whole).

All in all, a huge step forward from Spiderman's past games (except Spiderman 2). For example, Web of Shadows, even though it had a great web-slinging/combat system, didn't have Spider-man's spidey-sense dodge and had -terrible- voice acting and cheesy everything. This game nails the storyline, has great dialogue, and manages to have good pacing. Also, again, the combat system has the real potential to be satisfying. You have to, however, -really milk it-. Once you do, it's pretty worth it.

For hardcore Spidey fans, don't miss out the potential; if you're not so charitable, however, you're not going to find anything special here
