Might have been good before, but seriously dated now.

User Rating: 5.6 | Tekken (Platinum) PS
Tekken is the now legendary fighting game series that started in arcades over ten years ago. Many consider it to be the greatest fighting series of all time. Tekken 2, 3, tag tournament, and 5 were all masterpieces. Unfortunately, the same can't be said about the original.

Playing this game now is like watching a really stupid 80s movie you liked when you were a kid. You didn't care how bad it was, you just enjoyed watching it. But now, you can't even sit through the whole thing. It's the same case with Tekken. With a very limited move list and extremely limited replay value, Tekken doesn't stand the test of time.

The choice of modes is bare boned. You have arcade and versus. Thats it. In arcade you pick a character and fight until you beat the boss. There are a few characters to choose from like fan favorites Paul, King, Law, and Kazuya. When you beat arcade mode with a character you unlock hidden characters. At the end of arcade mode your character will have an FMV sequence, which sometimes seems completely irrelevant to anything. There isn't hardly any story, and what little story there is, the FMVs don't help in telling them. Versus is self-explanatory. You anf a friend (or enemy) duke it out.

The graphics don't look so hot either. They might have looked alright back then, but now they look like crap. The characters are very blocky. But they animate very nicely. Some characters just look deformed. Take Jack, for instance, who's arms are bigger than his body. It looks pretty bad. The environments look okay, even if there isn't too much detail to them.

The sound is okay, even if there is barely any. All you get is background music and moans and groans. Not much here, and whats there isn't very easy on the ears.

Overall, Tekken might have been a good package a long time ago. But unlike other fighting series (Mortal Kombat), this game doesn't shine like the other games in this series.
