Easily one of the best games of its time

User Rating: 8.7 | Tekken 2 PS
About 10 years ago Namco released the original Tekken. Though it didn't have the highest amount of quality and there were a few errors or glitches it was still an enjoyable game overall, but it also set the way for 5 of the best fighting games of all time. Of coarse a few months ago Tekken 5 was released in America and Japan, which is the latest game in the series, but Tekken 2 was the first truly superb Tekken game. There is 20-30 playable characters overall, but you will start out with around 10 or 11 or somewhere around there. Anyway each time you complete the game with a character you will unlock a new character. But there are some characters where you will have to go through special conditions to get. This whole system adds a new level of depth into the game as you will spend hours unlocking the characters. The fighting system is also very deep. You will have four attack buttons which are of coarse they are Triangle, Circle, X and Square. Triangle and Square are punch buttons and X and Circle are kick buttons, but its not like the two punch buttons will punch the same, one is right punch and one is left punch, same goes for the kick buttons. Tapping these buttons in different combinations will result in different combo's and each character has a unique move set, though in some rare exeptions such as Anna and Nina the move sets can be similar. All of the characters from the original Tekken are back such as Paul, Law, Kazuya, Yoshimitsu and Heihachi to name a few. Theres also a good amount of new characters (around 25). Some of the new additions are Kunimutsu and Jack. As i have already said each character has a unique moveset (with the exeption of 2 or 3 people). Each character will have about 30 - 35 moves for you to master, including 10 hit combo's and un-blockable moves which are also there most powerful. If you have played the original Tekken you will know that in Kazuya's ending movie, he throws his father Heihachi of a cliff. In the starting FMV clip you will see Heihachi climbing up that very same cliff. And thats when he throws the King Of Iron Fist Tournament 2 - for revenge! Each of the other characters also have there own individual stories and reasons to why there entering the tournament, but you will have to read to information booklet for more information on there stories. It should take you about 20 minutes maximum to finish the game with one character and seeing that there is over 20 characters thats a lot of gameplay, and Tekken 2 is the type of game where you will probably finish the story mode 4 or 5 times with your favorite characters. Other than the story battle there are a few more gameplay modes. These modes include Survival where you battle opponents until you eventually die, which is great to compete against friends in, theres Time Attack where you will have to beat story battle as quickly as possible and there are two multiplayer modes. Versus which is your typical 1 on 1 battle and Team Battle where you pick up to 8 characters and battle it out with your friend or even a CPU controlled oponent. There is also Arcade and practise but you won't really be coming back to those modes so often. Overall Tekken 2 is very easily one of the best games of its time (which is roughly 8 or 9 years ago). It features some impressive graphics (well they were impressive back then) and some very impressive FMV sequences. All the character models are a bit blocky but it doesn't really get in the way of the gameplay. Tekken 2 should last you a good 30 - 40 hours and though by todays standards it may be dated (obviously) but the game is still rock solid in nearly every aspect, though its not worth a purchase now, but in its day Tekken 2 was a incredible game.
