Nice simple fun football game.

User Rating: 7.5 | Tecmo Bowl Throwback PS3
Picked this up not so much because I wanted to re-live Tecmo Bowl, rather I wanted to play a fun football that didn't have the name Madden on it or was published by EA Sports.

I was a fan of the original Tecmo Bowl games (and Accolade's 4th and Inches) and while you can switch between the old and new graphics, I found myself playing with the new graphics, which look quite nice. The old graphics are interesting to see but quite frankly, they look pretty hideous today.

The gameplay is pretty simple and if you're expecting to be able to do a bunch different things a la Madden 13, think again. You have a small group of pass or run plays and your opponent tries to guess which type you'll pick. And that's it. Short, sweet and addictive.

When you're playing the quarterback and have picked a passing play, you cycle through your receivers with the X button and pass with the O button. You do not have the option to select your receivers with specific buttons. I've heard people complain about this feature on YouTube and I didn't see it as a problem. It just adds to the challenge in my opinion.

The game doesn't have any original player names but you can edit everyone's name, it's just that it's a bit time consuming. It took me about 15 minutes to redo the names of one team and at that rate it could take 7 hours to redo all the names. I just edited the teams I wanted and then for the other teams just the quarterback, RB, WR and kicker. You can find online player rosters for 1993 or any other year, they're out there.

What you can't edit is the teams uniform colours. Normally not a big deal but sometimes its a minor problem. For example, when playing Dallas versus Buffalo, both teams have a tan and white uniform and it's a bit difficult to know who's on who's team at a quick glance. It would have been nice to have alternate colour uniforms but its a minor quibble.

There doesn't appear to be anyone playing online. Not sure if it's an issue with the game or there's no one playing but every time I checked, it would say could not find any online matches, either regular or ranked play.

Where this game shines is playing against a friend, not someone online, but someone actually in the same room as you.

If you're after a quick football fix to play against a buddy or the CPU, check it out. I paid ten bucks for it and don't regret it one bit.
