Just What Wii-Ware needs!

User Rating: 9 | Swords & Soldiers WII
This game caught my attention a while back when I saw a preview of it. I thought it looked interesting but wasnt holding my breath. I was rather pleasantly surprised to see just how well done and fun this game was. It has surprising depth for a rather simple to play game.

Gameplay = 9.5/10
The gameplay in this game is really good. The gameplay itself is rather simple and easy to understand. The execution of these simple concepts though are far greater then the sum of its parts. This is reminiscent of Flash games in which you build troops that simple walk across the map and fight enemies as they meet them until they either die or reach the enemy base and destroy it. The biggest difference here is the fact that it is given a full treatment. You have 3 factions with a variety of units and spells. Each faction has a campaign with 10 missions a piece. Besides being fun it is quite humorous at times with obvious cultural references and silly stereotypes that made me chuckle quite a bit.

Controls = 9/10
The controls in this are both intuitive and very simple will still allowing complete control. Like the official Gamespot review says the only real problem is selecting a certain unit when you have a large group occupying the same space as the maps are effectively 2D. The game does seem to auto pick the most appropriate unit though most of the time, such as picking the unit taking the most damage when you use shield or the lowest health unit when you use sacrifice.

Graphics = 9.5/10
The graphics in this game is a cartoony 2D based artwork. The art is well done and nicely animated. Each unit is clearly unique and looks nice and sharp. The maps are very attractive and have all kinds of doodads and funny objects throughout the map. Who doesnt love buxom maids who collect gold? One rather nice thing is that the game doesnt seem to ever lag or slow down at any time. I have had a very large amount of units on screen in Multiplayer before and not a hint of slow down.

Sound = 8/10
The sound is also well done. The music isn't fantastic or anything but is pleasant and doesn't get on the nerves like some sound tracks seem to do after listening to it for a while. The Sound effects and voices of the units are great and quite silly but in a good way. I love hearing the viking berserker going SKOOORRR!! when I build him. The sound isnt flat out fantastic but is clearly well done.

Replayability/Multiplayer = 9/10
One nice thing about this is the replayability factor. There are several achievements (One that struck me as hilarious was the Son of Norris achievement) and three challenge modes to do. There is also a skirmish mode and a multiplayer mode. Unfortunately the multiplayer mode is only with another person and not online it is still very fun and even with the split screen it works out perfectly.

Simply put for 10 bucks this game is a steal. I would recommend it for essentially anybody with a Wii. Kudos to Ronimo games.
