I first started with playing Super Smash Bros. for the N64. It was a good game but it definitlley had a lot of potential. SSBM truly takes advantage of a new console and delivers what all SSB fans have been waiting for a looong time.

The gameplay is basically selecting your all-time favourite Nintendo characters and beating the crap out of your opponents, which can really make this game one of the best. Their are basic attacks for the game, the A button is used for standard attacks, and the B button is used for special attacks. You can change these moves by the way they work by using different directions while using the A or B button. The gameplay improves over the first one by adding new moves which can definitley help you on your goal of becoming one of the best is Super Smash Bros. Melee. Some new feature that were added was the new side step dodge. If you hold R and press donw on the analog stick, the character performs a side step dodge which can realy come in handy during battles. There is also the ability of catching items in the air. To tell you the truth i haven't really mastered this technique, and I sometimes get lucky with this, but if you know how it works then it well certainly help you on your game. If you thought that wasnt enough, there are even more items from the past. Mostly all of the famous items from the Nintendo games are availble to use, Like the kirby Warp Star, and even the classic Super Scope which was used for the SNES. The 1-P mode is definitley fun but sometimes while trying to get all the trophies( of the characters) it might get a bit boring and just get sick of it. Another new addition is the different types of modes for mulitplayer such as Giant Melee, Tiny Melee, and there's even a camera mode as well which you can store on your memory card. All of this definitley comes all together and shows a great improvement fomr Super Smash Bros. on the N64.

The graphics in this game are definiltey an improvement obviously because of the new system. All the character models are sharp and are greatly designed. They are so sharp that you are able to see some of the fur on Fox. That's really a big difference from the N64 version which makes this game come out alive. All the stages fomr previous Nintendo games also come which definitley bring back old memories, Especially the old Super Mario stages. It's just a joy to see those stages in this game. There are stages that feature the character. For example Fox has Corneria and Link has Termina. It was obviously a good idea to bring the character's stages into SSBM. I think it was a brilliant idea.

The sound in the games is nicely done as well. With all the character's voices added it makes the game much better. Another componenet which was done fantastically was the background music. The background music definitley supported its rightful stage and really set the mood of the stage as well. it may sound like that it doesnt matter but it really does. I think HAL Laborotories has done a good job inserting this component of the game. Cause it really wouldnt be a complete game without the music. This just goes to show that if one part is missing, this usually brings the whole game down. But i think they have done a good job incorporating all of the components that were needed for this game.

Overall i think HAL Laborotories have outdone themselves and have put in a great effort into this game. I applaud them for bringing one of the best fighting games out there. After playing this game, i really couldnt think of how they can make this game much better. The only reason i could think of is maybe more improved 1-P mode. That is the only concern i have. I recommend that you pick this game up for your Gamecube. It is absolutely a must-have for your Gamecube. THis is certainly the right step for the SSBM franchise.
