The Japanese version of this game, The Lost Worlds is basically a harder version of Super Mario Bros.
The gameplay is still great and smooth but different from any other platformer game in the series. This is the only platformer game in the Mario series that lets you choose who you want to play as. You get to choose from four characters, Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. This game also has a different gameplay style which was good just for this one Mario game and this is one of the reasons why people thought it wasn’t as good as other Mario games. I think that if the series would continue with this kind of gameplay the Mario series wouldn’t be as good.
Each character in this game has different strengths and weaknesses. Luckily there is a helpful stat chart.
The controls are still fantastic and simple. Once again the “A” button is to jump and the “B” button is to run. The directional buttons are of course to move. A new feature that wasn’t in the original Super Mario Bros. is the ability to pick up stuff from the ground and to do this you press the “B” button on top of what you want to pick up and to throw it all you simply have to do is press the “B” button again.
The graphics are way better than before. The characters had big heads in this game when you don’t have your life full which is kind of weird.
The sound is good. You hardly ever hear the music from the last game. The only time you will ever hear the Mario theme is when you go to a secret room using a power-up.
Overall this game is great. If you haven’t played this game before you should go out and buy it even if you have heard it wasn’t as great as other games in the series. You should be able to find this game easily on eBay or you could wait until he Wii comes out and download it from the virtual console. Another way to get this game is to buy Super Mario Advance which has more updated graphics.
