A great platformer that is very well presented and which offers even today a challenge for gamers.

Arthur has to rescue Guinevere from the hands of an evil emperor, and you are the one who's controlling him. In a traditional platformer style you jump and run through all the levels.
The controls feel good, just like it should be in any platformer.
During the course of the game you’ll find several different weapons (that you throw at your enemies), spells and other items.
Among those are three types of armour which improve your weapon power and let you use magic.
When you are hit for the first time you lose your armour and are naked (almost naked…) and getting hit while you’re wearing no armour means one life less.

The graphics are beautiful and colourful. There are a lot of nice details and some very good effects. Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts demonstrated how wonderful the graphics can be on the SNES (although it was capable of even more).

An orchestrated soundtrack comes along with the great graphics. The music never becomes annoying and supports the mood very well.
The sounds are good and give an even more detailed feeling to the levels you are exploring. Yet there’s nothing too special about them.

Finally we’ll take a look at the difficulty and the replay value. Actually, those go hand-in-hand. If you’re trying to beat a level or a certain enemy over and over again, it of course gives the game a certain replay value. But that particular reason to play the game again can make you very angry and frustrated over time.
It IS a very hard game: There are tons of enemies everywhere, plus traps that make it even harder to stay alive, plus very difficult boss-fights.
But with some practice and enough time, everything is possible.

Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts is a classic jump ‘n run that is wonderfully presented. If you get the chance to play it and are not afraid of its difficulty, don’t let the chance to play it slip through your fingers.
