Even though a bit dated compared to today, still a great triumph for the RPG genre.

Nowadays, there is so much to expect from video games. The graphics have to look relatively sharp, the storyline has to be gripping enough to excite the player, and basically there must be a factor anywhere in that game that will keep the player going right to the wire. Many new RPG's of modern times have managed to successfully achieve this thanks to the wonders of today's technology. But sometimes we should look back at other games that managed this and although not as rated possibly today as they were then, at that time they had the formula spot on to make a great game.

Summoner was one of those such games.

From Volition came the story of a young man named Joseph Of Ciran, born with the mark of the summoner, and with a destiny to save the world. Not going to much into the story behind the game, Summoner takes the gamer on a great quest through many different realms and lands where Joseph is accompanied by several companions and faces various types of creatures and evils. The story in itself is one that will keep the gamer interested, with all of the twist and turns of your modern day blockbuster movie.

The graphics of the game come to light when you see the intricate details of all the surroundings. Impressive for it's day, however some may argue that this type of environment display is a bit dated. The way the backgrounds and surroundings "draw themselves" into the picture as the player moves closer towards them is a nice touch, however it must be agreed that there is an obvious flaw in the graphic design for them to be hidden in such a way in the first place.

The gameplay allows the player to navigate only one person at a time, but the gamer must balance between the characters of his party in order to be strong enough to progress through the game. This makes for a better understanding of the stories and the characters which is crucial to enjoying this game to the full.

Overall, besides some pretty obvious flaws in the graphics, there is not much more to be denied from Summoner, which makes a hard effort at being a classic RPG.
