“Strikers 1945” was a cool arcade game, and it was ported over nicely onto the PS1.

The game was similar to other top-down shooting games, along the lines of “Raiden” or “Jackal.” In “Strikers 1945,” the player controlled a WWII-era aircraft, with decidedly non-WWII-era armament. The player controlled his aircraft from an overhead perspective, and could maneuver the aircraft left and right across the width of the screen, but only had limited forward and backward movement.

The objective of the game was to obliterate enemy aircraft while obtaining weapon power-ups which included better cannons and homing missiles. As the levels progressed, the player faced increasing numbers of enemies that also moved more quickly. At the end of each level, the player was required to take on a “boss,” which entailed either a ginormous bomber, flying aircraft carrier, or something else equally large. Regardless, the “boss” was heavily laden with gun and missile platforms.

For a game with a simple premise, and limited controls, “Strikers 1945” was actually quite fun. The graphics were sharp, the colors were bright, and all the aircraft were cool looking.
