A combination of the NES and arcade versions of Strider.

User Rating: 8 | Strider XONE

The 2014 reboot of "Strider" combines the look and feel of the 1989 arcade game with the "Metroid"-style adventure of the NES version. A modern retelling of the original story, it also resembles "Shadow Complex" in terms of structure and action. Developed by Double Helix, "Strider" is pretty much what you'd expect in a fast-paced, side-scrolling game with RPG elements. You'll run and slash your way through weak enemies and use strategy when it comes to the boss fights. As you progress, you'll find weapon upgrades and abilities that will allow you access to previously inaccessible areas. Thankfully, Double Helix included plenty of scattered hidden items that unlock artwork and challenge rooms when found.

Fans of this type of genre will probably find "Strider" to be lacking in a few areas. The story isn't as deep as it can be and the game itself isn't very long. Also, when compared to the great "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" or any classic "Metroid" title, it doesn't hold up as well. But for a $15 downloadable game, it's a good one. I personally would like to see Capcom make a "Strider" in the vein of their "Devil May Cry" series. But even if they don't, an improved sequel to this game would also be great. Overall, I'd rate this 2014 version with a 7.8 out of 10.
