When I first that there was going to be a Star Trek MMO game I thought it sounded like a great idea. Star Trek has a whole universe of different worlds, environments, and species that would be perfect to implement into an MMO. I was imagining myself doing all sorts cool stuff like exploring your own ship exploring deserts, forests, or towns on planets having lots of cool missions to partake in like in a World Of Warcraft. With all of these possibilities it has a ton of potential to be great...unfortunately however Star Trek Online is just an average MMO and somewhat clumsily made.
To me it's more disappointing when a game has a lot of potential but fails at delivering on it. The gameplay to me was very boring with the missions most is shoot a number enemies or engage in ship battle over and over again. The graphics for an MMO is okay but not great; when you're in ground combat and facing against a certain number of enemies the whole scenario doesn't as tense or exciting as it should and one of the things is when you're shooting at enemies it doesn't look or feel like the projectiles are hitting the targets. In ship combat when you're moving around your ship it doesn't look like it's moving even when the light trails are flowing behind. As far as the textures on the environments they're a lot of the times low-res.
As for the controls it's kind of complicated. When you move around instead of using a mouse to look around you instead you'll be using the directional buttons to look around and you move like you're on a grid. There's a lot of buttons that you have to use for special power and abilities and it takes longer than it needs to be to get used to it.
Don't worry there are some positives of this game. I really like the extensive character customization where get to choose almost any famous species in the Star Trek universe. You can also change the different types of uniforms from different versions of the show. The trademark Star Trek sound effects are also in this game and if you're a fan of Star Trek you might get into the nostalgia factor of it. There is also a huge amount of content in this game there is so many upgrades, abilities, weapons, and there lots of places to explore. But sadly with all the faults in the game Star Trek Online deserves better.
