This is the first Star Trek game my stupid video store has ever gotten in so I have nothing to base it off of or compare it to.

This game is pretty freaking fun. You get to control various Federation Starships through some stories ripped from all the series. As you progress you unlock ships and stages for the other modes. Its basically an action game. There are no rpg elements like improving your ship or characters or focusing on going on missions and making choices. Its all about ship combat. Even though you are in space combat takes place largely on a 2d plane. You can change your Z axis(vertical) slightly but its mainly used for dodging weapons fire. Your left stick controls where your ship goes. Your right stick controls a targeting slice where you can manually aim at things or point at things you want to lock onto. Locking onto stuff lets you target specific ship systems. You can even lock onto stuff and beam away teams onboard to take control for a little while. Theres basically only a limited array of weaponry. Phaser style weapons that can lock onto 1 or more than 1 enemy ship and pulse phaser style weapons that you can not lock on with but are more devestating. You also get photon torpedo's which do alot of damage if you can fire them at the correct time. And you get land mines which you can either drop right behind you or fire in direction. Land mines are very powerful but are tricky to use.

You also get to reroute energy between the ships systems. You can switch energy from engines to sensors or weapons to shields. Increasing energy in one area reduces energy in the system its connected to. You can go faster, cause more damage, repair shields faster or lock on quicker. I tried one of the arcade modes where you just fight endless waves of enemy ships and it was pretty awesome but it doesnt really give you any reason to play. Littered throughout the stage are powerups like invincability or unlimited phasers which you just fly over. After awhile you pretty much have to fly around and hunt down invinc power-up's so you can survive run ins with the massive waves of ships all blasting away at you. The AI in that mode was pretty weak not that im complaining. Basically if you fly around you can bunch the entire enemy fleet into the center and just blast away at them randomly with everything. If you are using a ship with pulse cannons you could really kick some butt. I had phasers. It would have been nice if some of the ships fanned out and stuck in certain spots so you would have to get shot at. This game is pretty fun though and i highly recommend playing it. I dont think its worth owning unless you have someone to play it with(for the two player in arcade mode) or are a huge fan of star trek.
