Clearly a golden oldy that got games where they are today!

User Rating: 10 | Star Fox SNES
I remember in 1993, when I was nearly two, getting Starwing and me and my family being bowled over by the astounding graphics! I still have this on my original SNES and still love playing it for old time sake and... because it's just plain FUN! Then again, i'm such a huge fan of combat flight sims, so I'm an easy audience. Also, because of the name of the English version Starwing, If I were in the SFX chip team, I'd be really annoyed. Notice how the word Starfox had SFX in it. (S)tar(F)o(X) See it now? The actual gameplay of this is so flawless, it actually feels like a combat flight sim as good as today's standards. However, the very annoying part of the game is that you need to rescue your useless wingmen every 2 mins, while I'm trying to dodge flying Xs travelling aimlessly about. I think the wingmen are just there to either get in your way, or just so that you don't feel alone in combat. To be honest, especially for a SNES, the graphics are through the roof! This is because of the SFX chip installed into the cartridge. This allows the game to process almost 1000 8 bit pixels at a time. This takes up a lot of memory o the SNES. Therefore, the screen was needed to be shrunk in order to handel the full-to-the-brim memory used on the graphics. (Watching the bosses all apart, piece by piece is soooo cool!)

On the other hand, the price of the great graphics leads to massively negative impact on the gameplay. some bosses are extremely difficult. This is because the game has a very weak hit detection mechanism. In other words, it is hard for the game to pick up on what you have hit and whether you hit it or not.

You will just be stunned in a good way of the remarkable sound and music. I could listen to the music from Titania and Corneria over and over again. It is unbelievably catchy! The explosions and whatnot are also very realistic.

To sum up, Starwing is a fantastic game that any Nintendo and/or combat flight sim fan like me should at least have a go! When and if it appears on the wii shop channel, You should... no, MUST download it!
