A swing in the right direction.

The last two Spider-Man games I played were Spider-Man for the N64 and Ultimate Spider-Man for the GC. While Web of Shadows is not the best Spider-Man game, it is still a game that Spider-Man will enjoy.

The best part about Web of Shadows is its story. It begins with the tutorial that teaches you how to swing webs, fight and shoot webs. After that, you are sent 4 days into the past that begins with Venom attacking Spider-Man. During the fight, Spider-Man receives the power of the symbiote suit and defeats venom. Mary Jane is hurt, so you have to escort her to the hospital. You encounter a gang once you get their and you meet Power Man, who assists you in the rest of the fight. Spider-Man then helps Power Man clean up the New York City streets. This is actually a mundane part of the game because the story moves slowly and it is repetitive. The story gets exciting when the symbiote infects the city and you join shield to stop it.

You can also switch between Spidey's red suit and symbiote suit at any time. Both suits have unique attributes. The red suit is faster and more agile while the symbiote suit is stronger but slower. Their are also secret suits you can unlock by completing certain objectives. Both suits also have their own stats that can be upgraded and unlockable attacks as well.

The graphics were okay at best. The animations were fun to watch, but it looks like an average gamecube game. The cutscenes did look better, but they were not top notch. The camera is also very difficult at times.

The controls were good for the most part. The only complaint I have is with the nunchuck motion controls. To lock-on, swing the nunchuck down and to change suits swing it left or right. Sometimes a lock-on swing would be read as a switch suit command and vice-versa.

Combat is very satisfying. When fighting, Spider-Man moves very quickly and sometimes sends enemies flying. The animations were solid and the frame-rate never drops. The best part about combat is the web-strike. When this attack is used, Spider-Man jumps up, grabs an enemy with his web, and snaps their neck. You can also unlock different enhancements for this attack.

You can also choose to play as good or evil. After you complete a certain mission, the game will let you choose how to end it. This decision effects who your allies are and who your enemies are. Their are also different endings to each mission depending on which path you choose.

One downside to the missions is that they can get repetitive. Luckily majority of the game is not like this making it an enjoyable experience.

Overall, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a good game that marvel fans will enjoy despite it's flaws
