A fun game. Just don't play it in multiplayer. Or do; who knows?

User Rating: 7 | Sonic Superstars PS5

Positives:

  • Fantastic, colorful visual design.
  • Level design is creative and incredibly fun.
  • Solid platforming with some cool new power-ups thrown in.
  • Gameplay feels like a huge improvement over the "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" style that this takes inspiration from.
  • It's nice to have as many playable characters as it has.
  • Special stages, while not incredible, can be quite fun.
  • A good amount of content to keep you coming back after one playthrough.
  • The co-op can be chaotic, dumb fun...

Negatives:

  • ...but it is a mess. If you like bizarre stuff, play it in co-op. If you don't, avoid the co-op.
  • Boss fights are incredibly tedious.
  • Why is this so buggy?

Consensus: "Sonic Superstars" feels like an improvement over the style of "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," though it definitely comes in a pretty messy package. It's rather buggy, and the co-op is all over the place...though I feel like that's why I enjoy it. In a "so bad, it's good" way, the co-op is chaotic and can add to the fun of the game (though for all the wrong reasons). Multiplayer 2D "Sonic" sounds cool until you realize how fast everyone goes. But all in all, it's a pretty good game. If you're wary, wait for a price drop, but know that it'll be a pretty enjoyable game despite its warts.
