Sonic Adventure came back

User Rating: 7 | Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut GC

Sonic Adventure DX was one of my favorate childhood games. I bought it because I saw the Orca chase scene in a G4TV dreamcast game review. I knew I had to have it. That blistering speed. So I got it and it's pretty Good but not perfect. We'll see why

STORY

The story is told in the way of Seventh Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. You take control of 7 characters but one at a time. This intertwines greatly in the gameplay.

One day Sonic was alone in the town of Station Square. A train city, it was all happenin' until the cops came to see Chaos the God of destruction and couldn't fight him. It was only up to Sonic to defeat him and when he neutralized Chaos it was none other than the work of Eggman himself (obviously) Each character has a cutscene and though the story is Kodomomuke tier it's deep and complex. But not powerful enough. There are sad moments and funny moments. Funny by Japanese standards anyway. But it's all action.

GAMEPLAY

You have 7 characters. Each with their own abilities and upgrades

Sonic= Super Speed+Homing attack

Tails= Flight + Tail spin

Knuckles=Dig+ climb and flight. He has designated open ended levels.

Amy= She has a hammer and she is quite possibly the worst.

Big the cat= Big is a large anthropomorphic cat who's only thing is fishing for his best bud froggy. It's good if you like to kill time and brain cells.

E021 Omega= A third person shooter robot with the power of compassion.

The world of Station Square is open ended filled with human anime NPC's but the general world feels liminal and boring.

The action stages are where it's at. There is much reward for getting a good score at a good time limit. Many of these stages have nice set pieces. Fast paced and linear. Collect rings and save animals. Defeat bosses.

You can even raise Chao and animals and race them in mini games. It's fun for you and your sister.

With that there are rewards like Game Gear games which in fact these are the best games of all time!

GRAPHICS

No Caption Provided

The graphics are very exceptional. The looked great on the Dreamcast but the colored lighting was cut and the shaders are downgraded. The animation is pretty poor but the textures are sharp as all hell. There are some glitches. But overall the Polygon count is higher giving Sonic fingers where as before he just had Virtua Fighter 2 mitts. Many of the other assets like Eggman are stuck in 1999.

SOUND

The sound of SADX is laughable at best with cheeseball american voice acting. The music is pretty good

OVERALL

One thing I'd like to go before I finish up this review please do not buy it on XBLA or PSN as there are no unlockable games, no improvements, and letter boxing. It's worse and Sega will never change it.

But if you have a GameCube please do buy it.
