By adding great gameplay additions and tweaking the difficulty in the RIGHT direction, Sonic hits his GBA peak!

User Rating: 8.5 | Sonic Advance 3 GBA
Sonic Advance and Sonic Advance 2 were good games, but there was room for improvement. The first one reset the Sonic ground work by taking the classic gameplay of the Genesis days and successfully translating it to the GBA. The second one changes the boss battle and greatly ramped up the difficulty. The third and final edition to the Advance trilogy is by far the best one. You play as Sonic and his friendly cohorts. Like always, the gameplay involves running very quickly through lightning fast levels and dodging what seems to be randomly placed enemies. What is different about SA3 is the production value. The bosses in this game are not you basic "Sonic jumps on Eggman" affair and are genuinely interesting. The levels progress linearly but with the addition to a hub level for each board, you can go back and collect the Chaos that you missed in previous stages. This collection side quest adds depth to the "get the chaos emeralds" formula that Sonic fans know and love. The addition of a parter ala Sonic 2, 3, and Sonic and Knuckles is back and this time it actually makes the gameplay drastically different. Depending on the characters you choose, your abilities will change and the combinations allows players to do tag-team moves. This is a more than welcomed addition to the classic formula and it is also good to see a throwback mechanic being used so sucessfully. Where Sonic Advance 2 was crazy hard, #3 is just right, not too hard and not too easy. It's just hard enough to add a much needed challenge to a classic style game. I've said it before, If you like 2D Sonic then you will love SA3 if you never have been a big fan, then stay away and find something else. Overall, this game simply reinforces the whole "stop making 3D sonic games" attitude that the world has, when it comes to Sega.
