U.S. Navy SEAL's?

User Rating: 6.5 | SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs PS3
This game does not feel like a Navy SEALs game at all. You have a team of international SPECOP's soldiers that are part of a 'crack' team as the game developer describes it.

I spent 15 years in the Navy and take it from me kiddies there is nothing Navy like about this game at all. I've seen these guys up close and what they wear and don't wear. And we are working with Korea now, since when? Mainly we work with the Brits (SAS). Where are the HALO drops or night mission oil rig take downs?

If they had removed the golden trident from the game cover then It would be more believable. SOCOM itself is not the Navy SEAL's. It's every special operations force in the US military. We have Force Recon, SEAL's, CCT's and the Rangers.

The game should have taken a multi-branch of service role showcasing all of the aforementioned untis. For those of you who do not know, SOCOM is short for Special Operations Command. And anyone here who is a VET like me knows how the military loves acronyms!

Enough with the rant, let's get down to the meat and potatoes. Number one weapons. I myself have personally fired the MP5N and the one used in the game is a fallacy. That particular gun is very easy to control under rapid fire. Additionally where is the signature MP5SD6? And furthermore since when would a real SEAL have to unlock his attachments and weapons. The armory should be open so that the operator can choose his tools. The only place this makes sense is MP. Where is the 'Fist of Death' (M82A1)? This game is missing so much. The MK23 USSOCOM II is the signature side arm....yes even to this day. Those of you stationed in Coronado, CA can easily go visit the armory across the street from NAB can have a look for yourself.

Character controls, I have no problems with this part of the game sayeth one flaw. You get stuck sometimes when taking cover and trying to hide bodies gets thwarted by the 'pick up weapon' splash screen leaving you no other option. The weapon section and team movement are better and faster than using the old voice commanded prompts. They really focused on this area very well!

A.I. is extremely jumpy even on easy mode. Back in S1 and S2 you can easily take out enemies without being detected.

Sounds are okay for what they are. It's not a deal breaker or anything.

Graphics can stand to be better. This is the PS3 and it supports 1080p and 3D so lets use that Zipper! The textures and normal mapping are 2006ish. Lighting is well....it's there. Play this game and then play Killzone 3. There is a major difference in visual candy.

All said in done this a casual weekend cyber warrior shooter. It was not meant for us who grew up playing S1, S2, S3, SCA. This is a watered down version of what once was a great series. This game is taking the Rainbow Six road to demise.
