Excellent Nintendo Switch Port

User Rating: 7 | Sniper Elite III: Ultimate Edition NS

I got Sniper Elite 4 on the PS4 as a PS Plus title some time ago and really enjoyed that game quite a lot. As a result, I decided to get the other games. I opted to get SE3 on the Switch as I was planning on a trip and thought it would be fun to play while I was there. Long story short, I was right. The Nintendo Switch port is really well done, but having played the 4th game first, I see how the developer, Rebellion, was able to improve on the game.

Sniper Elite 3 is the predecessor to the first Sniper Elite game I played, but it was still a lot of fun. The levels in Sniper Elite 3 are large, but not quite as large as they are in Sniper Elite 4. This prevents you from taking really long shots like I liked to do in the 4th game, but there are still opportunities for them. There are plenty of opportunities to use sound masking to get a shot in without being noticed and sneaking around to do. I had a lot of fun trying to be as stealthy as possible. I enjoyed trying to see as many enemies from far away as possible and eliminating them. I found the loop of identifying enemies, taking my shots, and clearing out areas undetected to be fun throughout my play of the game. To me, it didn't sour and I really enjoyed it.

Additionally, this is an excellent port of the game to the Nintendo Switch. The first thing that stuck out to me was how well the frame rate held up with the game in either hand held or docked mode. I never noticed a hitch! I am pretty sure the game is running at 30fps, but it was rock solid whether I played it handheld or in docked mode. Long shots with the X-Ray cam were continuously fun and graphic, as is the custom in the Sniper Elite series. The resolution was pretty good overall. I noticed some jagginess in both handheld and docked mode, but it was never a problem throughout my playthough. One major concern I had was if I would be able to see enemies in the distance while playing handheld. Fortunately, it was never a problem. I saw enemies at range in handheld mode just as easily as I did in docked mode. One final note about the Switch port is that the joy cons are not the best way to play the game. I feel as if I lost some fine adjustment when going for a shot that would cause me to raise the alarm unintentionally. I tried to use the motion controls to alleviate this a bit, but I think it made things a little less precise in actuality.

I really enjoyed my time with SE3, but I wouldn't put it quite as high as SE4, which I thoroughly loved. It's a great game to play on the Switch, with a few issues aside.
