I am a huge fan of the silent hill series and for some reason SH3 didnt have the huge fan appeal that the 1st and second game had. I dont know why this is. when i hear people talk about it, it is very much a love/hate relationship with the game. you were either totoally immersed in it or didnt even give it a second look. I for one played the hell out of this game. I replayed it several times to unlock the different weapons. My favorite was the light sabre that could be unlocked if you killed more enemies with melee attacks than guns throughout the story. All the SH games give you the creeps and SH3 is no different. From the abandoned subway stations and mall, to the hellish environments you will find once the usual transformation of the game takes place, are among the most disturbing images in video game lore. The variety of endings and in depth ranknig system give the game tremendous replay value and there were alot of different looks you could give Heather by unlocking T-shirts throughout the game and with use of codes unearthed on the internet. the voice acting was top notch for this game and the soundtrack was among the best of its generation. The sound effects that occured when walking through a dimly lit hallway or barely visible surrondings always kept you on the edge of your seat/bed/gaming chair/couch. The game's tight grip did not let go until the final credits rolled when you finally wiped your brow and were able to breathe evenly again. The puzzles are a little bit easier than in SH2, but if the setting is on hard, they will be next to impossible to figure out without a guide or walkthrough of some sort. With the setting on normal, it feels just right and most of the time you can solve them with your own wits, which i am a big fan of. I hate when puzzles are so tough that the onlt way to solve them is with an outside resource. Some games manage to figure out a perfect puzzle system and SH3 shines in this area. Much like the Resident evil franchise, you never had a wealth of ammo or health items to work with, causing the usual panic whenever your hunting rifle or handgun bullet count dropped into the single digits, but you always managed to find a way to make it happen in the end. Careful attention to detail made this series, and this game in particular, a great addition to the PS2 lineup. the cutscenes were very well contructed and were in some ways creepier than the game itself, answering a question but asking another of the player at the same time. the game kept you playing and offered a satisfying conclusion to a very compelling story. Seeing all the endings was a great way to spend 60 or so hours and I dont regret a single minute spent with this game. You wont either.
