A good Genesis title, though it could of been great.

I first was exposed to Shadow Dancer when a friend of mine got it for Christmas. Being relatively new to the Genesis, I was impressed by it. It is by no means a perfect game, but I thought it did well showing the Genesis graphic and sound muscle though at the expense of some game play.

I thought the graphics in Shadow Dancer were phenomenal. The characters were huge and colorful. The levels were dynamic and beautifully decorated. The sound and music were also great. The music and sound effects had that arcade feel, being loud and commanding. Both graphics and sound made Shadow Dancer fell like an arcade game, minus the cabinet, need for quarters, and jerks bumping into you. Game play wise though, Shadow Dancer falls a bit short. The levels are too short and are over before you know it. The controls are quick and responsive, but the addition of the dog seemed unnecessary. I really didn’t see anywhere in the game where the dog was needed or made the game easier if you used it.

Shadow Dancer has a lot going for it, but unfortunately, it could have been much better. I didn’t even know that Shadow Dancer was an arcade game until years later. If it resembled how the arcade game was, it would have fixed much of the issues I had with it. I still enjoy Shadow Dancer and think it is a great Genesis game. It is a shame that there was just too much room for improvement.
