MotoGP 08 Is Knocked Off The Top. For This Season At Least...

That's right! I said it! Superbike is quite the refreshing surprise I wasn't expecting. I mean, to sell new for thirty dollars, that's right, THIRTY DOLLARS, how high could my expectations have been? Right? Well, that's what I thought anyway.

Before I bought superbike, I played the MotoGP demo, and was completely disgusted by the crap Capcom put out. So, when I saw SBK, and I saw it was only thirty dollars, I wasn't expecting much. So, needless to say, I put off buying it, until this past March when I was jones'n for a new game with a few bucks burning a hole in my pocket. MAN was I surprised! For the price, the overall package is ALMOST top notch. I have to say that this game is definitely better than the latest MotoGP Capcom released in October '08.

Bike handling is really good. Just take note, as you crank up the realism, you're going to need some practice. I do like the realistic option in racing games. It can definitely be humbling to take on a game at that difficulty setting. Without patience and committment, this game will have you cussin' and throwing stuff in minutes! But the rewards for putting in the effort are worth the time.

The graphics, on the other hand, are one of th games weak points. Well, maybe that is a bit overboard. The bikes and riders look outstanding. The animations are great. But, the trackside stuff leaves ALOT to be desired. That being said, this game is a first effort, so I think I will cut them A LOT of slack in that department. I do like the pit area between sessions. The company that developed this game, Milestone out of Italy I believe, is the development house responsible for the astounding Superbike series EA published on the PC in the late nineties. I must say, I am glad to see this game is back in somewhat great form. I am looking forward to seeing if they can advance the series with each iteration, being as there is already a sequel announced. I also understand milestone developed MotoGP for Capcom as well, so I am surprised to see just how different the two games are.

The achievements in this game need addressing as well. Why are they giving achievements for failure? Coming in last online get you points? Wrecking your bike gets you points? Injuring your rider gets you points? Who came up with these? I would definitely address this issue in future versions. You listening Milestone? HELL, I'm down with racking up the achievement points, but I definitely don't want EPIC FAIL points! LOL

So in the end, this game is a solid purchase IF you are a fan of motorcycle racing. Especially if you are still on the fence as to which game to pick up. This is DEFINITELY the better game. It is by no means perfect, but the value is there, and you won't be wasting your time as a sequel is already coming. They could do with more tracks, more customizing options, better graphics, and a bit more atmosphere, but what they have already, is a solid foundation, and in my humble opinion a better game than MotoGP is RIGHT NOW. This game is definitely better than the reviews say it is. Don't hesitate. Pick yourself up a copy while you still can.
