There is absolutely no reason for you to waste your time with this garbage.

User Rating: 2 | Saban's Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue N64
Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue is one of the most boring and unimaginative games I have ever played. It has the combined forces of slow gameplay and uninteresting controls to make for one extremely dull package. The game does not even appeal to any audience, ranging from the people looking for a decent shooter to the die-hard Power Rangers fans that will eat up anything that features the heroes. To put it simple, this game will not appeal to anybody.

The story is a convoluted and uninteresting mess. It has a very uninteresting comic book like structure, in which it looks bland and just terrible. The story also is presented in an episodic fashion like the TV series, and with each episode, you have a new villain that appears. The villains range from some guy on fire to a giant typhoon and their only motive is to get the city dirty. Yes, I said it clear. They want to get the city dirty. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard from a villain, considering how one of them is a human typhoon. I mean, come on! The villains are as threatening as the Teletubbies. Aside the villains, each of the episodes focus on a specific ranger that tries to overcome the "villains" and save his/her friends from the forces of evil and save the world from slime, miniature tornadoes, and logs. Intense! It's like the developers came up with the story in like ten minutes, adding in generic motives and heroes that have absolutely no depth. Then again, I'm talking about the Power Rangers, so I shouldn't be expecting anything. After this explanation, you shouldn't expect much of a story here.

The gameplay is extremely painful and boring to play through. Your primary objectives of the ground levels are to shoot slime with your beamlike attack. You also have to save people by touching them. This portion of the game is played from a top down perspective and you press the A button to shoot forward and the B button to shoot backwards. That is all you do. It doesn't help that the enemies are complete wimps. They spawn from teleportation devices that can be easily destroyed and they only require one shot to be killed. They also barely shoot at you and just mindlessly try to run into you, which can be avoided very easily. There are stronger types that shoot at you and can be defeated with two hits, with them ranging from purple colored bad guys to ones that make a buzzing sound and wear suits with bee patterns. Sometimes you face a boss, who can be defeated by mindless A button mashing.

Another portion of the game are the rescue missions, in which you drive your car in the city streets and you shoot the slime and flaming cars with your water gun. You also have to save people with your ambulance, which I never understood for some reason. There are enemies that occasionally come and shoot you, but they can be ignored as you have a ton of health and health packs are everywhere. The best past about this portion is that you get to "accidentally" ram into other innocent vehicles and see them launch into the screen. It is absolutely hysterical for the first minute, but then it gets boring like the rest of the game.

The third portion of the game is a 3D rescue mission that you do with the Green Ranger, in which you fly a ship and rescue and shoot people. The controls feel like a mess and it's a pain to move around the ship. The again, these missions are limited, so they aren't as horrendously boring as the rest. Again, the enemies are complete wimps and barely require any attention as you go and rescue other people. It could have been a solid portion, had they added more enemies, tightened up the controls, added some distinct originality, and reduce the repetitive nature.

And finally, the last portion of the game is the Megazord fighting, which like the rest of the game is terrible. However it is slightly terrible, which makes it the best portion of the game. It is presented in a first person mode as you are in a tiny arena and try to shoot the bad guy to death with the A button and use your shields with the B button. All you have to do is repeatedly shoot the A button and you win. Of course you can collect power ups to make your victory quicker, but again, there's no point in doing so, since the game is so darn easy.

The game also has quite a bit of power-ups scattered along the levels, which make the game ridiculously easier. The power-ups range from multipliers for you projectiles, a damage increaser, and a freeze power-up that completely freezes all of the enemies for a limited amount of time. The power-ups just don't make anything more fun, and you will never be motivated to put in the effort of getting them. Overall, the gameplay is just painfully boring and there is no reason you should play it.

The graphics in the game are bad, but do have some nice color and texture in a few levels. However, most of the game is scattered with dull and gray buildings and completely brown backgrounds, meaning that you are underground. Some of the flying levels do have some nice textures throughout, but again all the buildings in the area repeat and look very generic in the end. The same can be said about the streets in the rescue levels, where all the cars look like generic blocks with color. There is absolutely no excuse why the graphics look so bland. I mean they aren't horrendous, but come on. Show some originality. None of the areas look like familiar places from the TV show and the only thing recognizable are the characters and that is it.

The sound in this game is absolutely pathetic. The main theme is pretty cool hearing in the menu and in the mission briefings, but that is the only track in the game. The levels completely lack any form of music and that is just sad. The sound effects are really limited, with some talking in the introduction of the levels that brief your mission. The rest of the sounds are the sounds of your attacks, enemy growls and the grunting after you get attacked. To make up for this, the developers were so kind to have a "Yay!" track put in after you complete the level, which sounds extremely stupid and generic. It's as if the developers were like, "Hey guys, we don't have enough sounds in the game. Let's just all stand by the mic and shout yay!" And the rest were like, "Whatever, as long as I get my cash. But don't expect me to sound excited!" Absolutely pathetic in the sound department.

The lasting appeal in this game is 3 hours if you play with one hand (I kid you not, I did that for most of the game), and take your time, but 2 hours if you skip the enemies and just rescue the people. There is also a multiplayer mode where you fight each other as the Megazords, but it's best that you just completely ignore it. Playing this game in 2 hours is a test of your insanity, simply because it is so dull and uninteresting that you will be begging for this game to finish. There is also no point for a second playthrough.

In the end, this game is just a lazy attempt at a cash in title. It could have been a good game if the developers even attempted to make a game. The gameplay is dull, the graphics are half-attempted, and the sound is absolutely pathetic. Nothing about this game is fun and there is absolutely no reason for you to even look at this garbage. So in short, avoid this game.
