Risk: Global Domination is a decent video game rendition of the classic board game

If you like the board game Risk, but are too lazy to set up the board and invite your friends over for an intense play session, Risk: Global Domination for the Playstation 2 may be the perfect solution. Essentially offering up the same gameplay as the original board game, this 2003 release is a nice alternative to using a real board with real pieces. You can create a match in just about any way you want - the game lets you choose the number of opponents, the difficulty of each individual opponent, one of three different play modes (which are all fairly similar), and various other minor details. Risk: Global Domination will be a lot of fun for any fan of the board game, and the fact that the video game also tracks your wins and losses can make it even more addicting.

Unfortunately, Risk: Global Domination does suffer from some flaws, many of which simply have to do with the medium it was created on. There's just nothing like playing a board game with real people, and this game instead gives you opponents who spew asinine one-liners every twenty seconds. While your opponents may be ridiculously annoying (so annoying that you'll probably turn them off within ten minutes), it still serves as a bit of a reminder that breathing human beings are the only things to play against for the full experience. The bland presentation in general just doesn't take advantage of the video game medium, either.

If the developers included a campaign mode or something different from the original board game, Risk: Global Domination could've been an excellent game for all strategy fans. Instead, I'd probably lead most players in the direction of the board game first. With that said, however, this is a worthy purchase for those looking to play some Risk without the hassle of a board and real people.
