One more day in paradise.

"We receive the due reward of our deeds." So reads the inscription on an artifact discovered in the early hours of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It's a passage from the Bible, spoken by Saint Dismas, a man crucified on the same day as Jesus. He spent years robbing and murdering innocent people before being sentenced to death for his crimes. And with those last words of revelation, Dismas earned the title of the Penitent Thief.

This anecdote sets the tone for a powerful game about loss, betrayal, regret, and redemption. In both its momentous set pieces and its intimate, personal moments, Uncharted 4 drives its narrative forward with a rare understanding of its characters, its world, and the gameplay tying them all together. It's a stunning combination of disparate parts. It's a breathtaking marvel of a game.

Now Playing: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Video Review

By this point in the series, developer Naughty Dog has led us across the globe in search of famous treasures from equally famous legends: we unearthed El Dorado in the Amazon rainforest, found the Cintamani Stone deep in the Himalayas, and entered Iram of the Pillars, a sandswept city with a religious history of its own. In Uncharted 4, however, we find protagonist Nathan Drake leading a quiet life with freelance journalist Elena Fisher, who happens to be his wife. They live in New Orleans. They have a three-bedroom house. They play video games together.

But this all changes with the return of Nathan's older brother Sam, who was presumed dead for 15 years. Not only is he alive and well, but he's fallen in with criminals, and needs help paying a debt. He also has a lead on one of history's greatest treasures: the loot of the pirate Henry Avery, which the brothers have sought since their early days of treasure hunting. Now, with Nathan forced out of his calm life, they set off to chase their elusive white whale.

Elena and Nathan are leading a quiet life at the beginning of Uncharted 4.
Elena and Nathan are leading a quiet life at the beginning of Uncharted 4.

Sam's arrival not only upends Nathan's newfound domestication, but complicates his emotional life as well. Uncharted 4 gives us insight into his past, and the way it shaped his psyche: how he despises authority; how he uses humor as a shield; how he long ago accepted violence as a justifiable means to an end. Uncharted 4 tells this story with affection, showing an expert attention to detail in the way Nathan's voice falters when discussing his childhood, or how he stares at Elena when she's not looking. These details are painfully human. They bring the characters to life.

This nuanced take on Nathan's personality is reflected in Uncharted 4's gameplay, too. As with previous titles, Uncharted 4 revolves around third-person combat, climbing, and puzzle-solving. But, unlike its predecessors, this game often lets you sneak past enemy soldiers without doing any harm at all. This is a clear influence from The Last of Us, developer Naughty Dog's darker take on a third-person adventure. Stealth requires a patient, measured approach--but it feeds into the idea of a more reserved Nathan. Uncharted 4's action flows seamlessly alongside its narrative. It's a fluid, believable experience when it all comes together.

There are minor mechanical problems: the cover mechanic can send you to the wrong obstacle or wall in the middle of firefights, and rarely, Nathan will grab the wrong ledge when climbing. But these observations wash away within the grand scheme of things. There's always something incredible around the corner to erase the momentary annoyances.

Uncharted 4's action flows seamlessly along with its narrative.

The game borrows from The Last of Us in terms of structure as well. Much like its cousin, Uncharted 4 embraces a more open approach with much of its level design. There are small sandboxes where you climb towers, learn the layout, mark enemies, and choose to fight through them, or circumvent the group in the interest of a quiet escape. These areas would hurt the pace of a lesser game, but Uncharted 4 keeps tension alive even in its calculated moments, transitioning from open areas to action sequences without halting the momentum.

Speaking of: Uncharted 4's set-pieces are the best in the series, and among the best-coordinated stunts in the medium. There's a heist in Tuscany. There's an acrobatic escape along the cliffs of Scotland. There's a chase through a busy marketplace, and it opens onto farmland as you leap between trucks, slide through the mud, and crash through shacks in the Madagascar countryside. Just when you think Uncharted 4 might settle into a steady rhythm, it throws something new at you with high velocity and incredible power.

One of the game's massive puzzles.
One of the game's massive puzzles.

These sequences give you agency, but also enough guidance to maintain the euphoric rush of a car chase without constantly dying. I'm reminded of Half-Life 2's escape from City 17, where you sprint through apartments and over rooftops, controlling your character while the game directs you without sacrificing tension in the process.

The key difference with Uncharted 4 is how it directs you with its camera and lighting, guiding you to the correct ledge or doorway or crumbling wall as you leap through explosions and plumes of smoke. Audio cues also aid you--characters shout over the din of gunfire, telling you when to fight and when to keep running. The dialogue makes sense within the moment.

And then there's the presentation of it all. The cinematography, both in-game and during cutscenes, amplifies the wonder of this gorgeous world. It's not enough to call the jungles lush. They're vibrant. It's not enough to call the game's version of Scotland vast. It's majestic. There's also incredible animation at play, and it sets a new watermark for games in the way it can illustrate subtle emotions like distrust and yearning.

Sweeping camera shots and intimate close-ups tie the characters to the beautiful locales, as Drake gazes toward mythical places he only dreamed of as a kid. Uncharted 4 doesn't root its visuals in the hues of realism, but rather, paints the world as it might look to someone intent on exploring every inch of it--someone intoxicated by the prospect of adventure.

Uncharted 4's cinematography, both in cutscenes and out, amplifies the wonder of its gorgeous world.

Uncharted 4's multiplayer, though, ditches grounded storytelling in favor of all-out chaos: Nathan Drake clones swing from grappling hooks. Victor Sullivans pistol-whip each other. The villains of past Uncharted games lob grenades and fire RPGs and beat one another into a pulp.

This all plays out in multiplayer mode staples such as team deathmatch and zone control. But then there are Mysticals--attacks that make use of the artifacts we've become familiar with throughout the series. El Dorado summons aggressive spectres to attack your foes, the Cintamani Stone revives fallen teammates, and the Djinn lets you teleport short distances, blinking from spot to spot for a tactical advantage. In addition to these fantastical elements, you can earn gold through kills and revives, and find it scattered across multiplayer maps. It lets you add Mysticals to your inventory, but also lets you summon AI snipers and medics to aid your team's efforts. Uncharted 4's multiplayer exhibits the necessary creativity to elevate its already fluid third-person mechanics.

But although the multiplayer works well, and features a progression system that can keep you playing past your first few matches, it is not the primary draw.

The world is bathed in vibrant hues and gorgeous detail.
The world is bathed in vibrant hues and gorgeous detail.

The draw of Uncharted 4 is its remarkable single-player journey. How each of its parts feeds into the same cohesive whole. This is a narrative that continues in its gameplay, as Nathan places a reassuring hand on his brother's shoulder, or mutters a joke in Elena's ear. Uncharted 4 is so meticulous, you get the sense that its characters are thinking things we'll never hear out loud. "We have a lot of ground to cover," one person says. Is that in reference to the journey, or the first uncertain step toward forgiveness? We can read it however we want.

Uncharted 4's gameplay pushes the narrative forward, the narrative feeds off its gameplay, and every detail coalesces to create something bigger. Uncharted 4 bounces between set pieces and personal moments with such grace, with such skill and poise and affection for its characters, that you don't mind when the guns stop firing, and the smoke clears, and Nathan gets a moment to breathe.

Yes, this is a thrilling adventure through exotic locations, with spectacular action sequences and a pacing that pulls you through with ease. I had a smile on my face the second it began. But it's also a story about family. It's a story about self-examination. It's a story about making sacrifices for the ones you care about.

And most of all, as its final moments make clear, this is a story about storytelling--the importance we lend our idols, legends, and myths. How we pass down the ones that inspire us. How an old photo of three friends sitting on a pile of gold can unleash a flood of memories. Uncharted 4 is a challenge to the medium. In its writing, in its design, in its understanding of what makes games unique, Uncharted 4 is something to aspire to. It's a shining example. And we'll be talking about it for years to come.

Uncharted once again sets the bar for this generation of consoles. Not just in visuals, but overall player experience. As an owner of a PS4, XB1 and Wii U and who's played all the big games on each system thus far, I can say without question this is the best looking game, visually so far in this console cycle.

But while Uncharted has always had amazing visuals, its really the crazy summer blockbuster set pieces and best-in-class voice acting and characters you actually feel something for and care about that make the series stand out from 99% of everything else out there. Uncharted is the reason I became a PlayStation fan as I had up until the PS3 been mainly a Nintendo guy and to a lesser extent Xbox guy.

And for all the basement dwelling, pizza pop nuking, PC elitist idiots out there bragging once again about their superior specs, trying to justify their purchases, you're just jealous that the most-awarded, highest-reviewed game franchise of the past decade as a TRUE PlayStation exclusive and you can't play it without one :P

Don't you have drivers to update or a virus scan to run right now or something? Seriously? Go away, nobody cares! Instead we'll be enjoying this masterpiece of a video game, the absolute pinnacle of the medium on our lowly PS4's. ;)

@Chernnunos: this is a hatter comment, for sure you belong to that category of gamers who prefer to be beggar, hacker, cheater, exploiter in all aspects in one game, that's why you're just a slave, unglorious one, living in own world where you supose to be free, ombilicum mundi but you're just a slave in a PC world :-) .... i would like to say that you deserve that but i know that you're brain washed, just a slave ....so go back and update your drivers, scan with antivirus your beloved PC, search for updated hacks and exploits for your beloved games ... you deserve that

Will NEVER have a game on the level of uncharted 4 , or uncharted for that matter, if you want to play it or enjoy it go and buy a ps4 which you probably already own. Talking about a p.c. On an article about a ps4 game that has scored a 10, F#%k a dam P.C.!

@Chernnunos:

So glad you replied! It gives me a chance to rip your flawed argument apart! Ready? Ok let’s go. Back in the NES and SNES eras, please point out to me the “PC tech” that the NES and SNES were “riding the coat-tails of and comparable experiences on the PC at the time”?

Insert crickets chirping sound here…

Yes development studios use PC’s to develop games, because PC’s run the software and tools used to build games because (GASP!) PC’s are multipurpose devices that more people around the world use to do work and research on than actually game on!

The part about how no PC gamers are jealous, even slightly so at some of the console exclusives is BS and you know that which is why you spewed forth such a spiteful reply to that notion. Hey I’ll admit that because I’m not a PC gamer I’m a bit jealous of a few PC exclusives too. You’re way off on my age too. Hint: the first console I ever played was the Atari 2600 – at the time it was the hot new thing…

The part about the revenues is interesting. The study I read (http://ca.ign.com/articles/2016/01/27/pc-dominated-worldwide-game-revenue-in-2015 ) included all the free to play (or “pay to win”) garbage as well as casual gaming on websites such as Facebook and others as well as “tablet PCs” which basically crosses over into mobile gaming revenues.

In fact when you parse it out and compare ONLY PC gamers with custom-built gaming rigs or pre-built, gaming-specific desktops and/or laptops with Steam accounts and at-least PS4/XB1 level specs (or higher of course – can’t leave that out now), the console industry dwarfs it in overall revenues and public mindshare/media attention.

@Chernnunos: I do not like to take a part in such kiddish argues but this time all I have to say, after all years of PC gaming and then console gaming that :
"The Better the game is, the more jelous, stupid faboys post comments under game's review"
This is the fact and in this case, I just ignore what You say bro because in Your opinion PC is the best machine to play videogames...and that my dear, is simply...not true. This is the best machine BUT to work. To manage, to administrate, to create (for ex. games for consoles)
Gaming on PC is a pain in the ass. Those are not games, that we should fight about, but the optimization, software efficiency, hardware efficiency. PC always struggled with the problem of hardware companies releasing new graphic cards yearly. I do not think this is normal. This is just a theft, trying to convince people that have to spend more money than current gen consoles are worth, just to play average looking games with highest graphic details....Sorry but this is simply WRONG!

Go ahead, I seriously want to know, I'll wait...

@l33th4lsh0t: I agree. QB gets a 6, The Division get a weak 8 But sony's republique and R & C get a solid 8..........???????????????? WTH???? Uncharted 4 is not a bad game at all, by no means. But it is not a 10/10 Just like MGSV was not a 10/10 but since MGSV is more a less sony favorite is got the score.

MARK MY WORDS. Battlefield 1 will get a 7-8 because its being backed by Microsoft and COD infinite crap will receive a 9-10/10 because sony is now backing COD.

Remember this!!!!!!

@xantufrog: he has a point , since new gen consoles there is a hate for xbox around gamespot weather they know it or not its a social thing , gears ultimate was an 8 they scored 7 , quantum break was a 8 they scored 6, and im a die hard uncharted fan and im sure uncharted 2 was better so UC4 must be a 9 not a 10 . i dont really care that much about game scores now daya since GS was my trusted source and now i disagree with almost every review ... mgsv , hitman and lot more that i dont remember now . was looking at ign since im looking for a new source and looks like they are more close to my opinions

@al2ian: There is no hate for xbox. Last gen virtually all multiplat games were reviewed on xbox both here and over on IGN. They were biased towards xb last gen, possibly because a lot of multiplat games seemed to run better on the 360. This gen the multiplat games run better on PS4 so that's the console of choice. Don't think they hate xb though. Far from it.

@al2ian: all those numbers... they are just personal opinion. You said Gears "is an 8 and not a 7". I don't see what that has to do with UC4 getting a 10, nor do I see how your opinion that it's an 8 and not a 7 is a "fact". I don't know, I don't want to get into a whole thing - especially not a System Wars type thing. I don't think UC4 getting a 10 should be considered a knock on XBox. Sometimes games are awesome and blow people away - I don't see why UC4 can't be one of those games? FWIW, most reviewers are saying this is in fact better than UC2 (since you raised that concern).

I don't know. Seems like the usual stuff where rather than people rooting for games to do well they look at each one as a "score against the other team" (or a bad review as a score for the other team).

@xantufrog:i think you mistook my opinion , the whole point i was trying to clear was that xbox games in this site are underrated and ps games are overrated since new staff came in ... and its not reliable anymore ... im not saying its a fight im not 10 , and in fact those are my personal opinions and scores just like reviewers but back in the day in GS they were solid and honest today they are just one sided , look at peter brown he hates idea of xbox , danny almost picks on it in every lobby show with or without knowing it , so i think they got effected by console wars and thats sad for a critic site

@l33th4lsh0t: Yeah, sure, especially when they scored 8 for The Last of Us - a game from the same studio, also avaible only on Sony`s console.

U4 is just that good (finished it today) and some Xbox1 fans just can`t get over it.

Not that I have anything against Microsoft consoles. I used to have X360 and it served me well!

Yes, the gameplay is very fluid in this one, but it's also very, very narrow. Extremely story driven. It's not a game for everyone, basically myself included, but it's all done with such finesse that i am actually enjoying the ride, while still thinking that i don't want games in general to move into this direction. The presentation is top notch, no doubt. Absolutely beautiful.

@groowagon: Same goes for me, I'm not a huge fan of story driven games but to be honest, Naughty Dog master this genre and put so much effort into these games that I just can't pass on them and do enjoy every little bit of them.

"The Last of Us" is still my best game of all time. (Single player that is)

I found everything to be near perfect in this game and so far, despite the fact I only got to play UC4 for like 1h, I did notice they kept some gameplay mechanics from TLOU that makes UC4 even better than its predecessors. (Gameplay-wise at least)

For game designers to be able to grab such a large pool of different kind of gamers into their pretty narrow genre, these guys deserve recognition for doing such a great job of releasing masterpieces after masterpieces.

That's what you get when you put more than 2-3 years of hard work behind an upcoming title!

Naughty Dog, you guys are the sh&t!!! =D

@silv3rst0rm: I prefer the story and general atmosphere of TLoU. I couldn't put the controller down playing that. Whereas with this after a couple of hours I don't mind having a break. It's not as addictive. Would imagine the first few hours would really drag on a 2nd play through. Does look freaking amazing though.

As far as console games go, uncharted 4 sets the bar really high in the graphics department. Just recently finished Quantum Break on pc and then to uncharted on ps4 was a shocking evolution in graphics fidelity. Its remarkable how far ps4 games have come. I cant imagine how the neo could improve on things. Xbox one needs a major overhaul if they ever plan to compete.

Unfortunately I have never been a fan of the uncharted series. I tried so many times to complete the first game, but I just couldn't because it was so bad in so many regards that I just gave up. I do want to like it though, but for some reason it just didn't click with me. It's a shame, because it's one of Sony's biggest stables. I did love the last of us, which naughty dog also made.

@Sweetew: I recently played the Uncharted collection and part 2 was still fun to play. You can always skip the first one and go straight to the second

@Sweetew: If you only ever tried the first one then that's why. It's VERY clunky compared to the sequels. I didn't get into the first one at all. Loved the 2nd one though. Third was a bit meh coz of the story. So far this one has been incredible.

@analgrin: Yea, that might very well be it. The second one might be a lot better, but it's still a lot to have to suffer through a whole game to get to the good stuff. Well at least you piqued my interest, so now I might give uncharterted remastered a go.

@Sweetew: Just buy the new one. These are like Indiana Jones movies, each has it's own story. You don't have to watch/play previous ones to understand what's going on. I only ever played about half hour of the first one. Completed the 2nd. Played 4 or 5 hours of the third. Will most likely complete number 4

@Sweetew: Whilst I totally agree with analgrin (what a username btw) I would just go straight to this one (4). The 2nd was great at the time but is now a bit meh to play too.

In interviews the dev's said the cutscenes are all rendered live using the games engine. When I first loaded up the game and saw the boat thrashing about in the waves, the water splashing all over the place, the individual hairs on Nathans head moving in the breeze. I thought, they lied, no way is this NOT pre-rendered video. Then the camera slowly moved behind drake and I was in charge driving the boat. . . . my jaw hit the floor. Gobsmacked.

This game is better looking than anything I've played on my PC (i7 6700k + gtx970). Well done ND. Even in the main picture above you can see a few stray hairs on Nathans head, they all move realistically, more importantly not a single jagged edge in sight, very well done. . . I'm still in shock at how good this looks. Think you get the message. I'll shut up now :)

@analgrin: Go figure what ND could do if they'd hit the PC market!!!

They could teach all these PC games company a thing or two about game programing, Quality control and customer care and dedication to good work.

@analgrin: as a PC gamer, i actually agree. the best technical (and artistical, in "real world" category) achievement in graphics that i have seen. such eye candy.

sure, it's not in 4K, it's not in 144Hz and all that s**t, but considering the hardware, it's one hell of an achievement.
