Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty Review

  • First Released Sep 18, 1997
    released
  • PS4

Second breakfast.

Dried blood cakes the catwalks of RuptureFarms, the biggest meat processing plant on Oddworld. Gangly, emaciated Mudokon slaves scrub the factory's floors with dirty rags. Sadistic, squid-faced slig guards let off steam by beating the workers with the butts of their rifles and laughing at their cries of pain, while overhead conveyer belts cart seemingly endless barrels of processed meat to destinations unknown. Despite the harrowing conditions, one blue-skinned Mudokon slave named Abe still thinks he has a pretty good job. But after stumbling upon RuptureFarms' plans for a tasty new product, Abe abandons his cleaning duties and sets out to escape the slaughterhouse.

So begins Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, a remake of 1997's side-scrolling platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. But this remake doesn't simply scale up the original game's prerendered, 2D visuals to 1080p; it presents the same levels and puzzles, but rebuilt from the ground up in real-time 3D. This changes your window into Oddworld itself. While Abe's Oddysee divided its levels into still screens that used transition effects when travelling between them, New 'n' Tasty features a camera that scrolls with Abe as he walks, runs, and sneaks through Oddworld. Though this is nothing new for games today, it's still a thrill to see areas from Abe's Oddysee that would have required travelling across seven or so screens rendered in New 'n' Tasty with an impressive seamlessness. The camera is also free to close in for tight shots, tilt and pan for cinematic effect, and pull out to reveal more oncoming obstacles in tense chase sequences. This allows you to get a better look at the consistently gorgeous environmental design, which has lost none of the original game's style and detail in the move to 3D. For me, it felt like New 'n' Tasty presented a literal depiction of Oddworld as my mind's eye saw it in 1997.

Now Playing: Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty Video Review

1997's Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee on the left, and 2014's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty on the right.

Despite the brand new visuals, New 'n' Tasty takes great care to retain the core side-scrolling platforming that distinguished Abe's Oddysee 17 years ago, and still makes for a unique game today. Abe is a weakling, being extremely fragile and lacking in offensive capabilities. He is more concerned with surviving his enemies than destroying them, and does this by sneaking past them, outrunning them, or turning the environment on them when possible. Abe can hide in steam vents, lead gun-toting guards into land mines, zap them by activating electric fields, and occasionally possess a guard to temporarily make him turn his gun on his comrades.

New 'n' Tasty takes great care to retain the core side-scrolling platforming that distinguished Abe's Oddysee 17 years ago.

Abe's enemies are always scarier and more powerful than he is, in ways that give each of Oddworld's creatures distinct behaviours and identities. Possessing a slig allows you to issue basic commands to Slogs--small dog-like creatures--even going so far as being able to order them to kill another slig. Spider-like paramites won't attack unless backed into a corner, whilst predatory scrabs will attack on sight unless they see another scrab, upon which the two will fight to the death. Exploiting these behaviours is the key to solving most puzzles, and the behaviours themselves mix well with environmental hazards in ways that never feel repetitive.

Each of the original game's pre-rendered cutscenes have also been remade and, in some cases, expanded upon.
Each of the original game's pre-rendered cutscenes have also been remade and, in some cases, expanded upon.

Once he makes it out of RuptureFarms, Abe discovers his quest isn't solely about self-preservation. He needs to acquire two mystical hand scars that contain the power to shut down the slaughterhouse. Along the way, he must free his enslaved Mudokon brothers by issuing them basic commands and leading them to portals. For all the traumatic ways Abe can die in this hostile world, there's a certain slapstick quality to the proceedings when you have three Mudokons in tow who are just as frail. They aren't the brightest of brethren, so you need to tell them to follow you, and occasionally wait, lest they walk straight into a land mine or electric field before you clear the way. The variety of voices in New 'n' Tasty, and actual lines of dialogue, have been greatly increased over the original, so the Mudokons feel less like carbon copies of one another. The addition of rag-doll physics in this remake pushes the dichotomy between the dark subject matter and comedic attempts to survive even further than the original game. I laughed, and felt a little bit bad about it.

Trying to survive as a fragile character like Abe was something of a novelty when Abe's Oddysee was first released; he died in one hit, but had unlimited lives. The same is true of New 'n' Tasty, but this remake adds three difficulty levels, the easier of which allows you to take more than one hit before dying. But even the hardest, "classic" difficulty level is still forgiving, thanks to the addition of a quicksave feature--something introduced in the original game's sequel, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. Quicksaving in New 'n' Tasty is accomplished by tapping the PlayStation 4 controller's touchpad, and quickloading is done by holding the touchpad down for a second. It's an easy, intuitive system, and if you keep it in mind it's unlikely you'll lose more than a second of progress upon what are sure to be many repeated deaths.

Unfortunately, many of those deaths are likely to occur because of the way New 'n' Tasty's control scheme differs from Abe's Oddysee's. The original game was released before the first DualShock controller, so you altered Abe's movement speed by holding down the shoulder buttons. This fine, digital control was important, as the game required precise timing of sprints and jumps to avoid landing on mines or falling down chasms. New 'n' Tasty changes this by putting two movement speeds on the left thumbstick; pushing it slightly makes Abe walk, while pushing it harder makes him run. This led to a number of situations where I had to adjust my position by a single step, but ended up running straight into a land mine. Thankfully, sneaking is still bound to a shoulder button, so it's rare that you'll accidentally wake up a guard and get shot due to this new analogue movement system.

This in-game ad for Secret Ponchos feels out of place.
This in-game ad for Secret Ponchos feels out of place.

Perhaps the oddest thing about this remake is the presence of in-game advertising. For a game that is staunchly anti-capitalism, as evidenced by the snarky critiques that appear on in-game billboards, it seems contradictory for those billboards to then scroll to reveal a poster for an upcoming PS4 game. More harmful is that those ads contain depictions of human characters, violating the otherwise consistently odd nature of the game's fauna. Though rarely seen, these ads still took me out of the experience in an awkward, fourth-wall-breaking fashion.

Despite the ads, and occasional frustrations from the fiddly analogue movement, this is a remake that feels as though it was crafted with love and respect. With clever puzzles near identical to the original game, and beautiful environments brought to life with new visuals and a dynamic camera, New 'n' Tasty satiated me, even though I'm an Oddworld veteran and know each solution and secret area like the back of my (scarred) hand.

The Good

  • Gorgeous reimagined graphics
  • Deep and engaging puzzle-platforming
  • Slavishly faithful to the original game's unique sensibilities

The Bad

  • Analogue movement controls lack precision
  • In-game ads break the fourth wall

About the Author

Daniel survived the Stockyards, persevered through the Paramonion Temple, and bested the Scrabanian Nests to complete Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty in six hours. He rescued 170 of the 300 captive Mudokons, netting himself the good ending. About 20 Mudokons "accidentally" perished.

This game looks fantastic. Even with ads and new controls, I can't wait to revisit this game again.

I played the first game, but never finished it. I also have the sequel Abe's Exoddus as well. The 3rd game didn't inlcude Abe in it. There was suppose to have been 5 Abe games, but they quit the Abe series after the 2nd one. Anyway the 3rd game was Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee. Finally the 4th game was Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath.

@bfa1509 And Abes Exodus took it a step further! I still have nightmares about the little green dudes that licked you until you died. It was messed up.

Great classic game, but after all these years (almost 10 years since Strangers Wrath), it would be nice to see a new game in the Oddworld series. Even if that title was an old fashioned side scroller like the original Oddworld games, it would be a welcome addition to the series.

Forcing you to play a 2D platformer with an analog stick ? A very huge flaw in anotherwise flawless remake.

I really want this game, but I hope they fix the control issue first and let us select which input we want: i.e. d-pad with shoulder button or analog stick.

@R4gn4r0k I played Outland, Limbo, Mark of the Ninja and Guacamelee using the analog stick, nothing wrong with it. I think this is just an issue on this game that hopefully will be fixed.

@ahpuck @R4gn4r0k Hmmm well Mark of The Ninja and Guacamelee do make use of the analog stick for aiming. I know MOTN does, haven't played Guaca yet.

But they also have lots of different elements to them. Guaca is a metroidvania game and MOTN is a stealth game with platformer elements.

For a pure 2D platformer, Rayman Origins, New Super Mario Bros, I always prefer the d-pad.

Anyway, I would be okay with giving us choices. Some like analog stick, some like d-pad.

They could use a system like Rayman Origins or even AC does: hold the trigger to sprint when using d-pad :)

@R4gn4r0k I wonder if the D-Pad works with the game as well. It should. If not, they should be able to patch that in easily enough.

@blackace @R4gn4r0k True, it should be easy to patch in. Dunno, but from the review it sounds like analog stick is the only way to play this 2D platformer :/

I found the original game far too challenging and frustrating for my mediocre gaming skills, so I never made it far into the game before I gave up and sold it. I just don't have the patience to reply things time and time again, so the inclusion of an 'Easy' difficulty level has piqued my interest. I may just give it another try when the PS3 version becomes available.

What are these ads everyone is blabbering on about? I've finished the game and have not come across one ad... If they mean crabcakes ads, you know that's part of the game right? To make Oddworld feel more alive

@DonBaser It clearly says "This in-game ad for Secret Ponchos feels out of place." under a screenshot showing an ad for Secret Ponchos (another game) so I really doubt he means crabcakes ads...

I think the in-game ads he's talking about are the orange things that tells you to how to do stuff. So not real ads but the format is clearly ads ... pretty much like the original.

The control precision is what makes the game so challenging.............. the only complaint I have is the useless 'health' system. 9/10 things will kill you in one hit, so it's pretty moot.

Great remake though. I hope they make the sequel. I didn't notice the in-game ads until they pointed it out..... but don't forget, the devs on this relied heavily on funding.

Quick save (save state) = every game this day and age should have. That and the price in euros is calculated right in this case and pure nostalgia, I will definitely buy this game. Just wait little while if they release physical version at some point.

Fantastic remake ! No screenshots ,no youtube videos can do this game a justice. You have to experience it yourself. This game is FUN. Ads ? I wasn't looking for them. I saw maby one, they are not "in your face" type of ads. If there are more of them they must have been implemented very subtly.

Nearly finished (saving almost all of Abe's friends) and the game is brilliant. Dan's review is really good.

8/10 but a must buy for people wanting something fresh with personality.

The ads thing is blown out of context though. It is not in game ads like there have been in most games. No other reviewer has mentioned it so far and I have honestly not noticed a single one.... care to clarify Dan?

all the people with faux outrage need to get a grip, adverts in games have been happening for years. and this is the game you're going to start picketing? a crowd funded game remake that needs the money.

I look forward to you all complaining at AAA games like FIFA15, BroBlops7, Broom Broom Racer 4...

@tcmentzer Although I don't quite agree with the review (thought there was way too much emphasis on the inclusion of adverts) I thought his presentation style was pretty good. I get a bit fed up with the overly animated American reviewers and like someone who's more straight to the point and relaxed.

Just thought it's worth mentioning as I also criticised this reviewer slightly, and when I read other comments it seems he gets an unfair amount of flak. Maybe it's because of his hat.

So funny how all of you just seem to ignore that ads like these have been placed in hundreds of games for years. Racing games, sports games even some shooters like Homefront. Where the hell was the outcry for those games? Just shut up and play the game. It's a good game and your robbing yourself of a good time.

EDIT: Let me also clarify that I do not think these ads belong in a game like this and it is kinda distracting, but it isn't enough for you people to be so outrageous. Saying that a few little ads is enough for you to not support it and never play it is just ridiculous.

@squall_83 So where do you draw the line with in-game ads? First they started with sports and racing games and developers said they wouldn't feel intrusive and to be honest in those games they weren't, at least to me. This game's very message is anti-capitalism and yet you have ads??? The video game industry has a reputation of taking things way out of the realm of being reasonable (just look at exclusive preorder bonuses and exclusive platform content). I say kill it before it grows.

I have gone through the promo material and previews for the game - there were no mention of in-game advertising.

Disgusting really.

Also, just so you know, the original game had a similar issue.

http://www.oddworldforums.net/showthread.php?t=1050

http://www.oddworldforums.net/showthread.php?t=521

Go figure.

With that said, I doubt that this is the "past" which nostalgic old-schoolers would want to return - the kind of past when some game-makers sell out their content to advertisers, i.e. engaging in product placement.

@DonBaser @parabol69 I haven't completed the game yet but I also haven't seen any adverts. Apparently they were in the original game too, yet I completed that countless times and don't remember seeing any adverts at all. I really wouldn't let it stop you from buying the game. You'd be missing out on a great title for a bad reason.

I've had the game bugged on me twice where I can't go further and so I need to restart the chapter, f*cking annoying, part of the bug is where if you chant he won't stop chanting, no matter what you press or don't press, anyone else getting this? apart from that it's an awesome remake.
