Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes Review

Kept you waiting, huh?

Metal Gear Solid's hallmarks have never been represented better than in Ground Zeroes, the prologue chapter to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It combines tense stealth and best-in-class cutscene direction, and these aspects stand above any other game in the series, but naturally, the narrative ultimately concludes sooner than you'd like. It may only take you an hour or two to finish the main objective, but the game doesn't totally end there. In addition to filling in some of the gaps between Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and the Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes introduces a new stealth system and an open-world format that's perfect for experimentation. Even though you're prepared for the next chapter, what's the rush? After the credits roll on the main mission and a handful of side activities unlock, the best part of Ground Zeroes is just getting started. With a wealth of secrets to find, and new challenges to master, chasing the endgame will keep you entertained for hours on end.

The story sequences in Ground Zeroes captivate with impressive cinematography, properly showcasing the exploits of the brutal yet heroic Big Boss; a battlefield prodigy who long ago disavowed his allegiance to the US Government and established his own military for hire. Metal Gear has always been recognized for having impressive cutscenes, but they're usually hindered by inconsistent animation and over-the-top voice acting. Thankfully, the opposite is true in Ground Zeroes. Characters move and speak with a natural grace, and even though it's jarring to hear the recognizable Kiefer Sutherland voice Big Boss in place of fan-favorite David Hayter, his delivery is far more realistic and believable. No matter the platform you play it on, you're treated to impressive lighting and masterfully crafted character and environment models that, along with the renewed cast, elevate Ground Zeroes' cutscenes above and beyond those from the past. They may not stick around for long, but they certainly leave a lasting impression.

Now Playing: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Video Review

Your mission begins in a typically dramatic fashion on a dark and stormy night at Camp Omega--a military black site on the coast of Cuba. You need to infiltrate the heavily guarded base to rescue a member of your entourage, and with only a shred of evidence to point you in the right direction, you have to use your powers of observation, eavesdropping, and some light interrogation to succeed.

Big Boss doing what he does best.
Big Boss doing what he does best.

With Ground Zeroes’ minimal HUD, a narrow third-person camera angle, and a sprawling base filled with potential threats , sneaking behind enemy lines has rarely felt so tense and immersive. Metal Gear famously stars characters with exceptional sneaking skills, but they also come equipped with fantastical gadgets that make their jobs easier by revealing enemy locations and alert states. Unlike in older games, there's no automated radar to track nearby enemies in Ground Zeroes; the only way to track enemies is to first spot them with your own eyes, and only then, after marking them with your binoculars, can you follow their movements. Knowing where any of the dozens of enemies are yields a small amount of confidence, but it's a minor consolation when every corner you turn may present unpredictable challenges.

Sticking to the shadows, crouch-walking behind objects, or crawling through the grass keeps you out of sight in most cases, but should an enemy catch a glimpse of Big Boss, you have a brief opportunity to redeem yourself when he enters reflex state. This bullet-time-like slow-motion effect gives you a few seconds to disable your spotter with short-range melee attacks or a well-placed shot to the head in order to avoid triggering a base-wide alert. Does it give you an unfair advantage over your enemies? Of course, but like the marking system, it also makes the transition into immersive, open-world stealth a little easier to swallow.

A Snake's eye view of Camp Omega.
A Snake's eye view of Camp Omega.

Unless you're a naturally gifted expert, it's a given that you'll eventually be spotted. Immediately, alarms blare, and enemies, sometimes in armored vehicles, flock to your last known location. You have two options: face them head-on or flee and wait for them to give up their search. It's not a binary system, however, and even though you may have lost your pursuers, they can remain on high alert for some time. In the past, a handy icon and a countdown timer would help you determine where your enemies were and how long you had to remain in hiding before they gave up. Those features have been removed, so you have to monitor live radio communications to gather the same intel.

The need to pay attention to your in-ear radio--which can sound off at any time--and the removal of automated radar systems set Ground Zeroes apart from the rest of the series. Nothing is simply handed to you, and Ground Zeroes is a far more tense and rewarding experience for it. Even though marking enemies and having reflex at your disposal are helpful, you have to work to use them to your advantage. If you want to immerse yourself in the game even further, you can disable marking and reflex altogether for the ultimate challenge.

After the credits roll and a handful of side missions unlock, the best part of Ground Zeroes is just getting started.

How well you manage to complete your objectives determines the ranking you earn at the end of a mission, and everything, from the number of times you're spotted to the number of casualties you cause along the way, has an effect on your score and the rewards you earn. Such rewards include weapon drops at the start of missions and in-mission trials that can significantly alter your trajectory during repeat playthroughs.

Rankings aside, you don't need to sneak in the shadows if you don't want to, and with an entire military base's worth of toys at your disposal, sometimes it's fun to stand tall and announce your presence. Armed with C4 and RPGs, you're fully prepared to blow up vehicles, destroy watchtowers, and charge in, guns blazing, when the mood strikes you. Though you're encouraged to play into the game's stealthy trappings by your co-commander, there are plenty of ways to actively disrupt Camp Omega, and some side missions are designed with this sentiment in mind. In one, you're challenged to assassinate notorious war criminals, and another sees you firing explosives out of a helicopter to protect the extraction of a comrade.

Camp Omega is rife with explosive opportunities.
Camp Omega is rife with explosive opportunities.

This dichotomy between stealth- and action-oriented gameplay lends itself to fear, tension, and excitement. One moment you can hear a pin drop, and the next, you're bolting across a chaotic military base with bullets whizzing by your head and desperation clouding your focus. If this were a more linear experience, perhaps the allure of this contrast would wear thin, but there are so many ways to tackle individual missions, be it the path you take or the weaponry you choose, that there's almost never a shortage of new tactics to explore. When your only playground is a military base, it's easy to find new ways to entertain yourself in Ground Zeroes.

Unfortunately, if you hope to be entertained by an equal helping of Metal Gear's typically perplexing and intriguing narrative, you'll most certainly be disappointed. There's some fat to savor here, hints of what's to come in the next chapter of Metal Gear Solid V, but once you've digested the cutscenes that bookend the main mission, it's a pure gameplay-driven experience from then on out. Though it's unusual for everything to take place in a single location, there's so much to do and see, and whether you take a stealthy or head-on approach, infiltrating Camp Omega is a thrilling experience that shouldn't be missed.

The Good

  • Challenging and engrossing stealth mechanics
  • Extremely replayable
  • Realistic voice acting, dialogue, and animations

The Bad

  • Story raises more questions than it answers

Bet this would have gotten a 5 or 6 and been called things like "rip off" and "waste of money" by the reviewer if this didn't feature the Metal Gear name.

Funny how certain things like MGS, GTA and the recently released Titanfall are seemingly immune to criticism, generally speaking, by most gaming outlets.

@Doolz2024 Funny how you didn't mention Call of Duty in there, and only have gone after the ones that are being picked on the most recently... hmmmm.....

@Hoski0999 @Doolz2024 CoD has actually been getting criticism, hence its omission. Any recent CoDs sporting 97s on Metacritic like GTAV? Nope. Looking at the 360 version of Ghosts right now on MC... 73. That's not indicative of a game receiving a wealth of unjust praise. Do your research next time before making ignorant statements.

@Doolz2024 and second of all, I'm not a fan of GTA, but i'm sorry that series is not receiving unjust praise. Its one hell of a well put together game at a grand scale. Its hard to nitpick those kind of titles, its just not my cup of tea to play.

Just like this game, have you played it actually i should ask first, is high quality. The AI is well thought out, the textures are well lit and nicely detailed, the sound is amazing, the gameplay is solid, pretty much all details have been gone over with a fine comb. As for Titanfall, it too is a well put together game, it focused on fun fastpast gameplay and added its own flavor here and there to seperate it. I loved Call of Duty 1 through 4 because it always did something new and deserved its praise because it was a solid game. When they started cookie cutting and it still rose in fame is when it was unjust.

And you mentioned GTA V being untouchable, did you see the Call of Duty that was actually out when that game was out? Pretty positive stuff on there so if you are using games from back then you need to compare it to games that were out when it was out :)

Thanks Slick

@Doolz2024 That's GameSpot at its best. Not to mention the AWFUL coverage of Nintendo products with awful reviews for them (when these actually happen).

Well, Maybe if Nintendo actually put out games that didn't suck and if they actually made some new IPs and a Console that isn't 8 years behind in technology for once, maybe, just MAYBE, everyone would start showing them some love again?

I'm really curious to try this game. I wonder why someone would make such thing and say "you can complete this in a single hour" and still asks $30 for it. What is happening to gaming nowadays? Not even deluxe SNES/Genesis titles were as fast to complete.

@rushiosan

Its $30 because of all the man hours that went into the game and they have to make money so they can pay all of their employees who made it? I think thats why. I could be wrong though.

30 bucks for a game that can be speed run in 10 minutes? 30 bucks for a game with a standard play through time of 1-3 hours? I'm sorry, but no. It's a glorified demo with not much to offer, but it gets an 8. That's ridiculous. If it was priced similar to dlc or something, I wouldn't say much, but it isn't. The game's overpriced.

@chipwithdip Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean that's all there is to do. I've put HOURS into this game so far, doing the other missions and trying to 100% everything. Honestly, this game is really only for die hard MGS fans anyway. We'll take more from it than anyone else would. A regular game would probably beat the story, much about with the extra ops and call it a day, but we'd 100% it, which will take countless hours, then play around with it for fun before we grow tired of it.

mixed feeling about this game. i love MGS stories. but ground zeroes has a 10 min story, then 2-3 hours of side mission. that just doesn't cut it. i only pick this up because afraid that MGS5 will not include GZ with Phantom Pain.

Hope the DLC will be worth it with Gold Hideo Kojima as one of the Mother Base Staff !!!

@02050muh Just to point out that "10 minute story" requires you to know exactly what your doing, exactly where your going, rush straight through as fast as you can, and skip all cutscenes. It was a speed run.

On a normal playthrough, even without doing sidequests, you would have to figure out where to go and what to do and would likely explore some along the way which would drastically increase the time. It's still not ridiculously long but it's far longer than 10 minutes.

@phoenix1289 @02050muh IGN gives about 1-3 hours on a normal playthrough. "Drastically increases the time"...to something shorter than even some of the shortest of modern games.

This demo is great! I will gladly give my money to support this great game. I don’t mind giving my money to people who make games this good, and when phantom pain comes out I will buy that as well. What people need to complain about is a bad game that you paid 60 bucks for, and this my fellow gamers is not the case.

wow the reviews everywhere are all pretty mixed and im happy to see that gamespot is giving a positive review, but being that this is a prequel or to be more specific a prologue, i think that there should be more questions than answers. it may be a bit overpriced and the story short but thats just it, its an opening to the main story. and on top of that this game has alot of replay value. so i just cant understand the hate on this game by so many people. are they hating it on the price or because its short?

I think some people should start being THAT obsessed about "complete game duration" and focus more on "how much of that time was something I really enjoyed".

It's not like you are paying 60$ for this game anyway, Still a better deal than those 4 CoD maps that people buys every year.

We are paying $30. THATS A LOT OF MONEY . Some expansions and DLCs cost less than that and add A LOT more to the original games.

@joelknapp @faizanhd Would $30 be a lot for an apple? $30 doesn't become more or less money based on what you buy with it... but that sure doesn't mean that value isnt relative.

@faizanhd And some cost more and add less. So?
I think you did not get my point: for MGS fans this 30$ can be a fair price since it is something they are going to enjoy a lot. For some othe people (your case I guess) 30$ is too much for this.

The only valid measure here is if people finds enough joy to pay for this since nobody is forcing anybody to pay for this thing. Thos interested "a bit" can always wait for the game to lower their price.

Te idea of "vote with your wallets" also applies here, not only when people doesn't like something; but also when they like it and say "nope, not at this price"

I've being playing the game all day long, and i have to say by far metal gear's best gameplay. Its just a lot of fun and high re-playability. You can't get enough. Cant wait to for the phantom pain, which will add even more elements to the gameplay. Plus bigger world and story. This game just shows you whats yet to come.

That being said 20 dollars is a little to much for this game. It should have being around 10 to 15 bucks max on all consoles. Still if i could come back in time ill buy it again.

That's the game with the closest gameplay fundamentals and game-world size that I can think of when compared to Ground Zeroes.

To any Metal Gear fan who defends this game in the matter of its main point of contention, do consider giving other games with a similar asking price and brevity of experience the benefit of the doubt, lest you want to be seen as typically biased in favor of anything Metal Gear.

@Gelugon_baat Does it really matter if anyone is biased towards Metal Gear or not? I think those who are are merely considered fans, and also do not have a problem spending $30 for this. Nobody is forcing anybody to buy it and all are welcome to wait for the main release next year. Ground Zeroes is for willing fans who value the series more than the average gamer who isn't as enthusiastic about MGS.

The Bad Peter gave here might seem silly to those who has not played this "demo", but as someone who had played and found the ending pushing the series arc into a much more convoluted direction, I got to agree.

I'm actually wanting to play this more because of the short length. As it is, I don't have enough free time to play through all of the great games coming out. The last Metal Gear I played through was the first MGS and I have fond memories of it. If they managed to pack a great experience into just a few hours of gameplay, then I am down for the ride.

@001011000101101 The game looks great, but there are some unattractive aspects to it. It wouldn't be hard to argue that it's the best looking game on new-gen consoles, but it's still not perfect, or at least as near perfect as one would hope.

@sudarsanvrs Actually, it was made on PC, and downsized to fit the individual consoles power. It wasn't made on last-gen consoles, and then upscaled and what have you to be slightly better on current-gen consoles.
