Knack Review

  • First Released Nov 15, 2013
    released
  • PS4

Falling to pieces.

Mercy is not part of Knack's vocabulary. He happily uppercuts a defeated enemy into a steaming lake of molten lava and flings an aircraft by its tail into the unforgiving ground. And don't believe for a second that he sheds a single tear for the pilot engulfed in the flaming wreckage; Knack doesn't let sentimentality distract him from a good fight. The only thing he desires more than brutal destruction is finding creative ways to exterminate his many foes. At least that's how the cutscenes play out. When you're given control, Knack mindlessly punches his way through corridor after corridor of enemies, and you're left wondering why Knack gets to have so much more fun than you do.

Oppression is the theme that binds Knack's overarching narrative together. Goblins have been forced from their lands by the imperialistic humans, and after surviving in the wastelands for generations, they finally have the power to mount a rebellion. Goblins aren't the only creatures who have to deal with oppression. Knack was created by a benevolent doctor who has found a way to turn ancient relics into a sentient being. The philosophical implications of this discovery flip the very notion of life on its head. As Knack muses about the nature of love during a quiet cutscene, you realize that, like Frankenstein's monster, he is capable of self-reflection and poignant observations. And yet, he is treated like a weapon. Does he deserve to be viewed as an equal even though he was birthed through alchemical experimentation? Such ruminations are glossed over. Instead of realizing his humanity, Knack usually acts like a meathead, cracking his knuckles while he waits for his next fight.

Even Knack can appreciate fine art.
Even Knack can appreciate fine art.

Instead of realizing his humanity, Knack usually acts like a meathead, cracking his knuckles while he waits for his next fight.

Relying exclusively on combat isn't inherently bad. There are plenty of games that slowly build on their fighting mechanics and provide enough twists and detours to keep you riveted. However, Knack's combat lacks the necessary depth to captivate your senses. The core problems stem from your meager repertoire. Knack has only five ways to attack the many enemies who confront him, and you learn every one of these moves in the opening tutorial. Three of these attacks--a whirlwind, a projectile blast, and a shock wave--serve as special powers that can be activated only when you collect enough sunstones. Another, your jump attack, propels you toward your enemy as a wrecking ball. But because both you and your enemy recoil when contact is made, you can't use this as the setup for your combos. Which leaves you with the standard punch. So you punch, and punch, and punch some more, for that is how victory is achieved in Knack.

There is weight behind your attacks that makes you understand the pain you're causing, and slow-motion finishers hammer home just how strong Knack is. But solid mechanics mean nothing alone. Because there is such little variance between fights, you're quickly lulled into the bored stupor of predictability. Knack absorbs relics into his body, which allows him to grow from a pint-size pet into a hulking monstrosity. Remember when a mere goblin took three hits to kill? Well laugh at those miniscule fools as you plow through them without breaking a sweat. Behold Knack, destroyer of goblins, devourer of worlds! Sounds pretty amazing, no? No is right. As you get bigger, so too do your enemies, so there's no difference in how fights play out. You still just punch your way to success and perform the weakest double jump known to games, only now you're fighting tanks instead of men.

There may be a red carpet, but this is hardly an event.
There may be a red carpet, but this is hardly an event.

During a moment of enlightenment, Knack realizes that his ever-changing body can be composed of more diverse parts than just relics. Ice, wood, and other materials automatically get pulled into the vacuum of your body in certain levels, shifting your appearance from runic golem to elemental beast. But said changes are only skin deep. Sure, a flaming arrow may melt your icy heart, so you can lose your outer shell that serves as a shield, but there's no mechanical difference between normal Knack and his earthy counterpart. Still, Knack does occassionally introduce ideas that hint at a real evolution. For instance, in some levels, you have a crystalline body, which initializes Stealth Knack. It's finally time for some real variety, right? Not quite. With the tap of a button, Knack can walk through the laser beams that serve as a high-tech security system. But enemies can still see you, even though you're invisible. It's hard to stifle a laugh when the doctor says, "No more sneaking around" after an enemy shoots at you, as if sneaking was ever an option.

So you punch, and punch, and punch some more, for that is how victory is achieved in Knack.

There are 13 chapters in Knack, and every one of them plays out in the same tired manner. You start out small, gradually build your size until you're huge, and then arbitrarily shrink back down when the chapter wraps up. There's always a convenient excuse for this transformation. How else could Knack fit in a biplane if he doesn't lose his precious relics? And then you start the whole cycle all over again. In the beginning of the eighth chapter, the doctor plainly states that you must grow as large as possible, as if we somehow missed the pattern that has been cemented from the onset.

If you're craving exploration, there are opportunities to veer slightly off the main path if you have sharp eyes. Weak walls can be knocked down to find extra relics and sunstones, along with collectible treasures that imbue Knack with new abilities. There are tons of collectibles strewn throughout Knack's expansive worlds, but these pieces are worthless on their own. If you're lucky enough to complete a set, you get a perk that gives you a passive ability. It wasn't until I reached the ninth chapter that I completed my first gadget, more than eight hours into my adventure. And what did I receive after all that effort? Enemies released a small amount of sunstone power when defeated. Don't expect these collectibles to inject the diversity Knack so desperately needs.

Just look at that Knack punch.
Just look at that Knack punch.

It's hard to stifle a laugh when the doctor says, "No more sneaking around" after an enemy shoots at you, as if sneaking was ever an option.

The most baffling part of Knack is its surprisingly high difficulty. Considering the cartoony artistic design and simple mechanics, you might assume that this game would be a cakewalk. But after you die a half-dozen times in the tutorial, that belief will be banished from your mind. When Knack is in his smallest form, he dies from just one or two attacks, and can stand only a couple more when he's bigger. So death comes frequently. If you're vigilant, you can avoid enemy advances by performing well-timed rolls, but even these should be used with caution. You're not invincible when rolling, so you can't abuse this maneuver. Now I love a good challenge, but dying is an annoyance in Knack because the combat sequences aren't interesting enough to play through once, let alone multiple times. There is a cooperative mode if you need a helping hand or want to offer one. Knack is as vulnerable as ever, but the second player controls Robo Knack who respawns after dying. Sadly, the action isn't any more fun when you're dragging a friend along for the ride.

Knack's downfall is that it focuses entirely on combat, but doesn't offer enough variety or depth within its system to compel you onward. Any early thoughts you may have that there must be more to the punch-punch-repeat action than meets the eye are banished once you plow through hours of the same basic sequences. And even Knack's few attempts at diversity are merely competent. The occasional platforming scenario lacks the joy of movement so necessary for jumping to be engaging, and the platform placement doesn't require any cleverness to surpass. There's not one element of Knack to rally around, to excite you. And without that special something, Knack crumbles just like its piecemeal protagonist.

The Good

  • Well-realized environments that you want to exist in

The Bad

  • Little variety to distract from the nonstop fighting
  • Even enlarging Knack or turning him invisible doesn't change the action
  • Artificial environments and enemy interactions
  • Tiresome combat with a meager move set

Poor people who pre-ordered a PS4; not 1 AAA exculsive thats worth buying it for. It already had so few exlcusives, now the 2 AAA exclusives turn out to be meager at best with a 7 for Killzone Shadowfall and a 4 for this game. For the rest only Resogun is "new"; but to buy a PS4 for an oldfashioned sidescrolling shooter, is a bit sad.

This is why I never pre-order a game a long time in advace, let alone a console; to much risk of it turning out not being worth the money.

@Jimzeel You don't preorder a 10 year console based solely on the launch games. When are people gonna realise this.

@IJONOI @Jimzeel Ah, so you buy it for 400 Dollar/Euro console just for it to sit in its packaging waiting for 6 or so months for a good game to come along with the enevatable price drop that follows a month or so later. Well, I do not. I will wait untill said games are out and I can actually use a new console for the games that are worth buying it for.

You got it all wrong. As such consoles have 7-9 years life circle, it means that there are an inevitable acquisition that is going to happen. Sometimes there are reasons to postpone it, others not, the ones that preordrer now, dont do it for the exclusive titles, the have to chooce a console for playing their not exclusives titles anyway. When you have now a bundle with a game, two controllers, the camera and the consoles for just 500$ then why wait up until deep down, drive club and mgs appear, its not that you are going to pay any less than that in a few months... In the mean time, you can enjoy the non exclusives in slightly enhanced version of the current generation, so its a win win situation!

@IJONOI Umm, I can't think of a console that didn't see a $50+ price break in the first year (plus throwing in a couple games or extra controller). I'm outta here, I've already gotten sucked back into this mindless madness. Go get yourself laid

@Jimzeel No that would be silly. I buy it now and use it. Play all the same games as you, plus some more. at 60fps and 1080p, with better controller, more multiplayer, better worlds etc etc. (hopefully). I've got the money there so why would I wait. And if you think the console will be reduced in price in the first 2 years you're in for a shock sir.

@IJONOI @Jimzeel Exactly! Think about all the amazing games you played this generation. Think about Gears of War, Uncharted, The last of us, Skyrim, Mass effect, portal, The Walking Dead and many more. How many of these games were launch titles? Think about the previous launch titles for Xbox 360 and PS3. Who remembers them? Who cares about them? No one!!!

Im curious why after a decade or how ever long gamespots been around, they Have not created ratings based on category not just based on game.

Just think about it, Knack may be a four for this genre of games but if you were to compare this too say call of duty ghosts (which I havnt played) maybe its a six or a two. Based on fun, value etc.

if they did this it would stop people from saying. Ohhhh this reviewer gave Knack a 4 and gta a 7 clearly hes mentally challenged.

Instead we would know where theere review biased is based on. Did this reviewer just play gta 5 online and then play knack. I dont see how knack could compete. Haha. Just saying. Its all perspective.

@IndependenceYou I see where you're coming from but I feel like separating them into categories is just less effective. If the point or reviews are to give the readers some sort of metric of quality, ideally, you're going to want to be able to compare them to other games of varying quality. Giving them categories is a slippery slope where now reviewers will have to define each game before they review them; what if a game isn't so easily defined? Or what if a game is a mix of different genres? It ends up just being a mess. At the end of the day, I think all people want are numbers. Numbers they can easily use to compare to other games.

Hmmm. I see where your comin from,

Then as a compromise they should put up the reviewers stats. To give us perspective.

Right next to the top of the article should be his last 6 reviewed games and his favortie game type.

This way we know what kind of reviewer he is.

If he gave CodBlackOps2 a 5/10 and i was obssesed with that game i know that maybe we dont gel so well on opinions. I know i could find this info out but why not make reviewers like a game character in themselves.

Have there avg. review score. There years of experience there favorite game.

I have no idea who this guy is. And why the eff would i do research on him.

If it was right infront of me though id read it and become more apart of the reviewers that way just by default.....

Gamespot you can have that idea for the low low cost of fr99.

Just to put this in perspective: Tom McShea also felt Bioshock: Infinite was a 4. I'm not saying this game is amazing or that I'm butthurt it got a low score but I'm sure it's higher than a 4.

Many other reviewers of this game would disagree with you. Granted I too take McShea's reviews with a grain of salt as he underscores games 99% of the time, but there is too much consensus that this game is mediocre to bad.

So one of the cons is : "Artificial environments and enemy interactions"

I'm officially done trusting Gamespot with reviews. They obviously have some shit ways of reviewing games.

If the fact that CoD Ghosts got the same score as TLoU wasn't enough of a red flag, this is.

@HowlPendragon Artificial has multiple meanings. Just because McShea used an easily misinterpretable tag line for the bad stuff doesn't invalidate all of what seem to be decent justifications for why the game got the score it has.

@HowlPendragon Ever hear of "different strokes for different folks"?

Get over it. People can and will have opinions that don't jive with what you believe. Shoot, the fact that there's only 1 attack button should be a red flag when games like God of War and Ninja Gaiden Black also exist in this game space.

@itmustbepaul "One attack button"? You clearly have never played a God of War game.

And I'm not attacking his opinion, I'm attacking one of his reasons for giving this game such a low rating.

What game doesn't have "Artificial environments and enemy interactions"?

I am REALLY hating the new review design, Gamespot. All the moving graphics behind the score, and the lack of a concise run-down area where you can see, at-a-glance, how good or bad a game is is REALLY hurting my enjoyment of your reviews. :-(

Please do yourself a favor and stay away from Gamespot's reviews. I'm sure Knack isn't groundbreaking but clearly these people don't know what the hell they're talking about when game's like CoD score equally with The Last of Us.

Let's hope Cerny can make better games than KNACK...although I believe that Tom Mc Shea likes to give extra harsh scores to games he just doesn't like, or doesn't want to like. Bioshock Infinite is not a 4 (a "poor" game) by any means, but I respect his opinion. His review didn't stop me from enjoying the game from start to finish.

In terms of KNACK, I feel like a "6" would've done the job...a 6 is a score that let's everyone know "Hey, this game is not really worth your money. But it might be good enough for SOME people"...a 4 feels like a straight up SLAP in Mark Cerny's (and Sony's) face...that's a score that looks really harsh on paper.

@warriors30 I agree. Cerny specifially said he wanted Knack to feel familiar, evoking the same gameplay experience's as his previous projects like Crash Bandicoot or Jak and Daxter. So most of McShea's points are pretty irrelevant.

Lately the Gamespot reviewing team has been garbage in general.

  1. GTA V - 9/10 merely for having no female lead characters (something it's never had)
  2. Arkham Origins - 6/10 For what? Being a Batman game?
  3. The Last of Us + CoD Ghosts - 8/10.......??????
  4. Knack - 4/10 but Mario & Sonic 2014 Winter Olympics 5/10.........?!!?!??

I mean, one of the "bad" things listed about the game are "Artificial environments and enemy interactions"......what the ****?

At this point, it's best to just wait for a critical consensus when it comes to McShea reviews. There's always like a 50/50 chance in any given review that he's overstating the positives or negatives of a game. He did give Bioshock Infinite a 4, after all.

I agree with Tom. From what I've seen it looks like a pretty bland game and lacks imagination. Due to it's simplicity, it may be fun for a 6 year old, but doesn't even come close to insomniac's Ratchet & Clank series; that's a great game and really funny no matter what age you are!
