Into the wild.

Far Cry Primal is a case study in how a game's setting can drive its every layer, from the tone of its story, to the dangers of its world, to the brutality of its combat.

That setting is the Stone Age. It's 10,000 BC, and our protagonist Takkar is searching for the lost members of his Wenja tribe. They're scattered across the Oros Valley, a dense wilderness of forests, swamps, and frozen caves, complete with mammoths and sabertooth tigers. As Takkar, you'll build up a new Wenja village with a multifarious cast of characters.

Now Playing: Far Cry Primal - Video Review

This reconstruction sets up Primal's progression system. By recruiting the aforementioned Wenja--such as the shaman Tensay or the warrior Karoosh--you'll unlock new items, weapons, and abilities. When you look past the facade, it's essentially a new skin for the franchise's traditional upgrade structure. But it lends character to what could be a lifeless system.

As you build up your tribe from within, you encounter members of other groups, the majority of whom have plans contrary to your own. The identity of each of the game's three tribes, and the political dynamic between them, sets up conflicts in a natural way.

Building your village grants you new upgrades, equipment, and tools.
Building your village grants you new upgrades, equipment, and tools.

So too does Primal's world. In fact, most of the game's conflicts arise from nature. Primal still uses the basic open-world framework of a traditional Far Cry game, with a cascading series of outposts to capture, weapons to unlock, and upgrades to craft. But the Stone Age setting is far more foreboding than those of past Far Cry games.

Here, vicious animals travel in packs, striking as a collective whole while you slink through the undergrowth toward enemy camps. A day/night cycle also adds more tension to the world: predators are more abundant and aggressive in the darkness. Even now, after dozens of hours in this valley, I still feel anxious as the sun goes down, hoping I have enough animal fat to ignite my club and ward off hulking carnivores.

This focus on survival permeates Far Cry Primal. In the northern wastes, the cold becomes a factor, making each bonfire a glowing beacon of safety as you fight to stay warm. In Primal's lush swampland, avoiding danger means avoiding the water, where underwater predators abound.

There's a fine balance between tension and fun that elevates the whole experience.

As a solitary hunter with simple tools, you're also less equipped to defend yourself than the protagonists of Far Cry 3 and 4. Gone are handguns and grenade launchers--here you have spears, clubs, and slingshots. They not only bring a slow, measured pace to combat, but also add to Primal's overall identity and tone. You're a lone wanderer here, not a walking armory. And although there are more ways to die in this Far Cry than any previous entry, Primal never feels too difficult--there's a fine balance between tension and fun that elevates the whole experience.

On one of Primal's nights, the valley's lurking threats coalesced into a challenge that tested all of my knowledge of the game's survival systems. I was out of wood for spears. I was low on meat for health. I was hundreds of meters from the warmth of the nearest campfire. So by sprinting toward the closest sanctuary on my map--collecting hardwood for torches along the way, and relying on stealth and my few remaining arrows for defense--I trekked through one of the more stressful scenarios the game had to offer. Yet it was thrilling. This was Primal at its best.

The Stone Age setting can also be a detriment, though. The simple toolset serves the game's themes well, but with enough time, it becomes clear how limited your loadout really is. In stealth scenarios, I rely on my silent bow. In open combat, I swing my club wildly. When hunting elk and grizzly bears, I use my spears. There are several more creative tools, but by and large, I find myself relying on the same simplistic options time after time. Primal's reliance on Stone Age combat detracts from the emergent scenarios that occur elsewhere.

Certain animals function better as stealth companions.
Certain animals function better as stealth companions.

There are also powerful enemies whose excessive armor chips away at the fun. I had the best spear upgrades possible, but even at this point in the game's late hours, these armored brutes can take almost 30 seconds to bring down. That's not fun--that's tedium.

But then there's the Beast Master skill tree, and it's the most impactful change to the Far Cry formula. It allows you to tame the creatures in this ancient setting, recruiting them to hunt, fight, and travel with you.

Jaguars kill enemies without alerting larger groups. Wolves pounce on distant archers while you close the gap. You can also ride bears and baby mammoths, clawing and bashing your way through groups of warriors with little resistance. You can use your owl to scout the land ahead of you, tagging more dangerous fighters and dropping makeshift grenades into groups of enemies.

Beast Master abilities are the embodiment of Far Cry Primal's strengths.

Learning the unique abilities of each animal, and taking the time to experiment with them, is essential for your survival. After a while, your predator allies become an extension of yourself. They become the powerful weapons otherwise absent in the the abrasive wilderness.

These abilities are the embodiment of Primal's strengths. When it uses the Stone Age setting to elevate the combat and reinforce the brutality of nature, it thrives. It fosters a give-and-take relationship with the wilderness, granting you the means to survive, but also the threats you have to overcome. That focus on primitive times can become a hindrance at certain points, with limited tools and repetitive combat, but in the end, Far Cry Primal stays true to its callous setting, fleshing out every layer of the captivating world it creates.

Editor's Note: Far Cry Primal is now available on PC, and after taming numerous wild animals, liberating defended enemy outposts, and recruiting several members of the Wenja tribe, it's clear that Primal's PC version not only matches the quality of its console cousins, but slightly outpaces them in several ways, too. 60fps makes the brutal combat smoother. Detailed textures lend a more natural look to the Stone Age environment. Far Cry Primal's setting is its greatest strength, and in its newest form on PC, it's still worth the many hours it takes to explore.

@Warlord_Irochi: Nobody believes the world is only 2000 years old. This is 2016 because we started counting again after the birth of Jesus. Christians and Jews know the world is older because Moses and Noah lived thousands of years before Jesus. You shouldn't take every opportunity to jab at religion. You come off like a douche.

@torrne667: It is based on fact. Whether people choose to believe is up to them. But factually all those people existed in our history.

@rabidpeperami: Even Athiests have said they exist. They just don't believe in the circumstances of which they existed. You should watch the history channel or something there kid. Egyptian symbols point to Moses and a rebellion of their slaves. Writings all confirm Jesus existed. I don't care what you believe, but the people themselves did in fact exist.

@rabidpeperami: Even athiests believe Noah existed. The flood in question actually happened too. There's geological evidence of it. The thing is it wasn't a flood of the entire world we know today, it was a flood of the local area, which to the people living at the time was the entire world. As for whether the flood lasted for 40 days (or however long), I don't know if there's evidence for how long it lasted. He did not build the ark because god told him to, he likely already owned the ark because he was a wealthy merchant. He definitely did not collect two of every animal, but he probably had some animals aboard, again because he was a wealthy merchant.

@rabidpeperami: Dude, that was half my point. It didn't happen exactly as written in the bible (from what I hear, you'd have to be crazy to actually believe that stuff), but something happened (because those were real people) which became that story, kind of like the game telephone.

Valid point, but then probably the game wouldn't score more than 6 of 10. So GS keeps quiet about it.

@loafofgame: the only thing that could have saved this game imo was a deep personal story that gave meaning to the word and purpose to the characters . if thats totally lacking then i guess there was this other game where ive fired a bow or 9 and swung a weapon for 400 hours already

I loved the first Far Cry! It was a great, fun FPS taking us away from aliens and space marines and giving us a beautiful environment. Far Cry 2 took the game to a whole new level and then Far Cry 3 fine tuned the tried and tested formula.

Sadly by the time of far Cry 4, it was all getting so very tired. I just hope this isn't a new skin for a dated formula. I'll probably play it once there's a price drop.

Maybe people should first play the game before talking about how it's a paid review...etc! So far, Primal is probably the most fun I've had in the latest instalments of the Far Cry series. It looks good, plays well, adds some novel ideas to spruce up the usual Far Cry formula. I don't see why so many people are jumping down this game's throat with boots on, especially since boots didn't exist in 10000 BC :D

@Mondrath: Yeah please tell us about the engaging story (That doesn't exist). That's the issue. It is a reskin of Far Cry 3,4, without cooperative missions (Which were a blast) or the map maker, or anywhere close to a solid acted Villian. If they were charing $19-29 for a DLC pack? Perfect. This is NOT a full price retail game for the minimal effort they put into it. Now, take all that together, and you have your reasons why people are disliking the game.

Then maybe tell us more about story? People gets suspicious since GS is hiding or deliberately not talking about important subject. If it's review then please review properly.

They stated that they wanted a spin-off similar to Blood Dragon, but then throw a full game price tag on it.
I might get this in the summer, when the price has dropped down to $15.

@SkytheWiz1: They (Ubisoft) never stated such malarkey. They wanted a full gaming experience for the next Far Cry game, not a spin-off like they did with FC: Blood Dragon. Think you got your page reading experiences twisted. Also, every site I've checked so far has clocked between 20-50 hours of playtime in Primal. I think that counts as a full game and deserves a new game pricetag. People work hard for these games and to bring them to you, ya know?

Wouldn't mind about repetitive combat if story is excelling. It's understandable that stone age hunters were not circus acrobats. What's bother me is the lack of information about story.

@HapiJoel:

Agree 100%.

I found every improvement between 3 and 4 (not that there were a lot) actually made the game worse. Couldn't start anything without the camp I just cleared coming under attack. So annoying, gave up on it after about 12 hours.

If there was ever a time I would accuse gamespot of getting payed for reviews, this would be it. This game looks boring as hell and I don't care how you slice it. The only thing that looks cool is the beastmaster approach which Im sure takes almost half a play thru to unlock. This is not a Far Cry game in any fashion. I cannot believe this game was green lighted to get made in the first place. I'm sure there is some who will enjoy but it won't be me and I loved 3-4.

@djdave614: They got paid for an 8? That's only 3% off the metascore and hardly the highest of the 53 current reviews.

This is just a difference of opinion between the reviewer's experience and your gut feeling.

Repetitive combat

Limited weapon set

well with the setting being 10,000 BC I'm not really expecting hang gliding, boomerangs, blow darts, throwing knives, fire eating flamethrowers etc.. saying that, I've actually played the game and had fun, the pre-historic setting, it's like single-player "Ark: Evolved" I guess, less the parachutes and dinos :)

There's also the little things they've put in like how you could injure whatever you were hunting and it would actually have an effect on it (FC3-4 I shot an animal I was hunting point blank and it ran and escaped whereas in this one it collapsed sometime after getting hit with an arrow on the backside, I guess it bled out) there's also the animal AI, the weather effects on you etc.. it feels a lot more of a survival game than the earlier iterations (at least for me anyway)

Lot's of people seem to have an issue with the pricing, though I suppose that's relative, honestly though I think Ubisoft (and a lot of publishers) are in a lose-lose situation, they'd get slammed if it was sold of as a DLC and slammed if they sold it as a full game (I think it's good enough to be a full game) there's no real way to please everyone I guess, someone's always got something to complain about, it's just the way of the world :D

@masato_indou: Name 1 game that doesn't have repetitive combat in some way. Just 1. Far Cry franchise, CoD, Battlefield, Just Cause franchise, GTA franchise, etc, etc. It's not the combat that can really get repetitive, it's the approach to said combat. If I all did was run around shooting the same gun at the same enemies in the same locales, that's repetitive. Huge open world environments, upgradeable weapons and abilities, etc, etc makes how you approach the combat less repetitive and more, well, fun.

Best you could hope for would be 25-30% off and greenman gaming has it for that now.

Not fooling me. I can also smell the ultra-repetitive side missions from here.

@Itzsfo0: "games are like that anyway people" !! Exactly the reason why I have quit gaming or most importantly why even I dont care new releases. I am still playing all different WC3 modded maps learning how to create one.... and good old Baldur's get, has both diversity of monsters and a rich world, story and complex game mechanics what more do I need. No games these days beat that..... sorry to break it... I feel if "games are like that anyway people" as you have pointed out, not necessarily compels you to go through the ordeal!

And this is partly the reason why gamespot scores are random and doesnt feel it is the true score of a game, because most games these days are super boring grindfest, it is also super hectic for reviewer's to but them through such insipid ordeal to get the reviews correct. For many honestly believes DRagon Age: Inquisition is honestly a 6 a bit more because some fanboys will hit on 10/10 option but my point is "when things are sht anyways" doesnt mean you have to go through sht. Even reviewers stopped caring about scores and what they review..... so why do you bother ?!

I'll pick this up at some point, though probably not quite at the $60 price point. The setting looks fun to me.

I have to laugh at some of the cut corners, like when he sneaks up on a person who is laying down sleeping, and they suddenly appear in the standing position so they can play the animation of them getting knocked over the head. I really hope that level of laziness doesn't permeate the whole experience.

@raptor1998: Sure, you can say that seeing someone else play a game will never give oneself the feeling of playing the game oneself. That is indeed very true.

But here's the caveat: is the feeling of the playing the game oneself guaranteed to be satisfactory?

There's always the possibility that a person might find that he/she has wasted his/her time and attention on a game which he/she doesn't like, not to mention the money and/or other resources which have been expended on getting a copy of the game (one way or another).

@GT_APE: Younger people? I have been gaming since the early 80s lol. But since you know everything, nice try lol. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean its for a young crowd. Farcry has been stagnant as of late, a campaign with one friend would be a blast, not sure how coop has anything to do with age, many old crpgs had coop campaign and they are as hardcore as you can get, def not for younger people. Funny you jump to these conclusions about people and how old they are, that is something "younger people" would normally do. Once again, how does thinking a game could use coop makes you part of the young crowd again?
