A New Monarchy.

The Taken King is more than just an expansion; it's also a heart transplant. And with its wounds sewn shut, the anesthetic wearing off, and the scalpels put away to dry, Destiny has pulled through the operation with renewed vigor and a much stronger pulse. Now, only a few scars remain.

Destiny's first year was a collage of peaks and valleys as Bungie released two expansions to its sci-fi multiplayer title. At its best, Destiny comprised a shooter with pristine controls and clever cooperative play. But at its worst, Destiny disrespected my time. To me, the first year of Destiny felt empty. Its gorgeous worlds held promise, but lacked much of a soul. I frequented those static environments because no matter how boring they might have felt, they contained the slim promise of better loot. I continued long past the point of actually having fun.

Now Playing: Destiny: The Taken King - Video Review

Destiny's newest strikes are among its most creative.
Destiny's newest strikes are among its most creative.

But The Taken King changes things. Now, my time is better spent. Bungie revamped the Light, loot, and experience systems to be more accessible, and provide a more rewarding overall experience. Light is no longer tied to specific armor pieces, but just an average of your gear's overall value. Raising it is necessary for difficult missions, but when it comes to your rank, you can reach the level 40 cap through experience alone. And now that loot scales with your level, the promise of better gear is always on the horizon, encouraging constant improvement and rewarding results.

By decoupling Light and character level, Destiny allows you to play however you want, regardless of which missions you want to play, or how often you want to play them. In Destiny's first year, only certain events were worth pursuing for better gear. But now, much of the loot is out there, somewhere in the solar system, waiting for you to stumble upon it. You can fight through cooperative strikes, explore Mars, or turn in bounties for added experience. You can summon a plethora of challenging bosses in the Court of Oryx, a public event area teeming with Guardians in search of gear.

The Dreadnaught itself, an abandoned ship in the rings of Saturn, is full of secrets, hidden items, quest chains and more. It's an area worth exploring, and sets the stage for The Taken King's exceptional narrative.

Nathan Fillion's Cayde-6 delivers a phenomenal performance.
Nathan Fillion's Cayde-6 delivers a phenomenal performance.

The new story missions follow our Guardians in their fight against Oryx, the Hive king whose looming shadow has darkened things since we killed his son in The Dark Below expansion. These story missions are coherent, providing much needed context to the quests our Guardians embark upon. I always knew the mission objective, and always felt the pull of that final battle with The Taken King at the end of the road.

There's also more character here. The vanguard leaders are more than talking mannequins now, with personalities, motivations, and fears of their own. Nolan North delivers a stellar performance as your Ghost, but its Cayde-6, the Hunter leader, who stands out. Voiced by Nathan Fillion, his sarcasm and sardonic wit are just facades. They slowly give way to doubt and remorse when he learns of a friend's death. For the first time, Destiny transcends archetypes, and shows signs of humanity in its storytelling. It's ironic then, that Cayde-6 isn't human.

Fighting through these story missions is more varied than ever before. It's not just endless shooting at cookie cutter enemies. The Taken are ghostlike clones of Destiny's other enemy factions, which Oryx has absorbed into his own army, creating a force with a wide array of abilities and attacks. Fallen captains blind you, Cabal scions split into triplets, and Vex goblins shield their allies, forcing you to aim for one specific grunt at a time. Destiny's combat is more dynamic now, and more versatile than the skirmishes of its first year.

Strike bosses in The Taken King follow suit, and require teamwork and tactics to defeat. Among the best is The Restorative Mind. This Vex boss hidden in the depths of Venus is more than just a bullet sponge, and constant motion is the only way to lower its defenses. You'll need to drain its shield, protect your teammates, and fight through clusters of Vex in a ring-shaped arena. All of this is done on the AI's terms, though, as the boss rotates an impassable force field around the room, dictating the flow of combat and forcing snap decisions.

The Taken King transcends archetypes, and shows signs of humanity in its storytelling.

Bungie added even more variety to combat with the new subclasses, which change how I approach certain situations. Take my Hunter's Nightstalker option, for instance. By firing my bow into a cluster of enemies, I tether them together, marking a prime target for my Titan friend's Hammer of Sol, or the Warlock's chain lightning. It also makes every shot a critical hit, so using it at the right moment, on the right enemies, is part of the decision process. The subclasses don't just open new possibilities for character loadouts, but also encourage experimentation in cooperative matches.

The same rings true in the Crucible, Destiny's PvP arena. The subclasses aren't as balanced here--I reverted back to my Hunter's Golden Gun when the new subclass failed to produce--but they still alter the flow of combat on each new map. And these are among Bungie's best arenas, with varied sightlines and verticalities, offering hectic clash points amid the firefights. Once again, the developer has proven its prowess with multiplayer level design.

And when you've gathered enough powerful gear, equipped your best weapons, and tailored your subclass to cooperative perfection, there's the new raid. It's called King's Fall, and it's the most expansive in Destiny to date. It begins on a sour note, with ill-advised first-person platforming that appears farther in as well. But everything else gathers speed. The checkpoints all require careful teamwork, and the bosses are some of the most creative Bungie has ever designed.

Golgoroth is a prime example. On our tenth try, when muscle memory guided us through the fight's necessary tactics, this hulking ogre had a sliver of health left. We were almost through. And the moment before he died, when all six of us threw caution to the wind and unloaded everything we had, despite the Taken minions surrounding us--this is Destiny at its finest. Careful planning gave way to satisfying victory. And I don't want to spoil too much about the trek's latter stages, but its final boss, both in size and scope, is colossal. He's a fitting end to Destiny's most dynamic raid yet.

The Hunter's Nightstalker subclass creates useful tethers for cooperative situations.
The Hunter's Nightstalker subclass creates useful tethers for cooperative situations.

But despite all of the improvements to Destiny's systems, all of the new content in place with The Taken King, and all of the heart that's gone into its compelling storyline, remnants of Destiny's hollow past still endure.

After 16 hours with the expansion, the grind began. At first, I didn't mind. The Taken King excels by granting you gear through hard work rather than luck. But I played the same strikes five times over, day in and day out. I trudged through the Dreadnaught for hours on end. I completed similar bounties throughout the week, and didn't see many variations throughout 35 hours with The Taken King.

The king himself.
The king himself.

For a game that requires so much grinding, it still doesn't have the breadth of content to support the repetition required. The promise of better loot is the driving force, but the journey there is taxing. Quests are interesting only for a time, until they once again become long lists of cloying chores.

But The Taken King still deserves ample praise. It not only grants us new content, but reinvigorates a game that needed new life. In one of The Taken King's early story missions, you'll come across the remains of Destiny's first strike boss. He's right where you left him, surrounded by his own robotic innards, the life long gone from his dormant shell.

"Remember when Sepiks Prime was our biggest problem?" Ghost asks us. And like the Guardians who killed that boss, Destiny has since moved on. There are still traces of its mediocre first year, but it's now more vital, and more promising, and it has left much of its past behind.

The Good

  • Excellent story, with outstanding voice acting, characterization, and cutscenes
  • Varied enemies result in more dynamic combat
  • New progression systems create a consistently rewarding experience
  • Quest log contains numerous paths to follow between strikes and story content

The Bad

  • Game becomes repetitive after 15 hours, and not much variety to support the late-game grind
  • Many quests are still taxing, with chore lists and boring objectives to complete

About the Author

Mike's hunter reached level 40 within 15 minutes of starting The Taken King. 35 hours later, he's now at Light level 296.

@Brownie1582: Name one MMO that isn't repetitive as a matter of fact most RPG's are repetitive. There's not one game in the world that doesn't get repetitive after a while. Destiny gives you 100s of hours of content most game you $60 give you 8 at max. And it's fine don't get it won't stop millions for getting it. GG :)

@neowarrior793: I like Destiny but I didn't get anywhere near that much play time out of it. Maybe its just because I'm pretty good at FPS games, but I finished all the content in the game pretty quickly. And I made sure i did everything, even all the patrol missions.

@neowarrior793: I don't think you grasp what people mean when they are talking about the length of game play dude. I've had countless hours of fun with the same 30 second porno clip but that doesn't mean that the 30 second porno clip has countless hours of content.

@doonish: a game time not not just set on a story-line or a level, its not a simple case of "im max level iv finished the story-line this game is done" this is a game with actaul no real ending the pvp itself is good enough to keep people playing, i myself sometimes only play for 2 hours but its fun on its own. there are people who want the best stuff and yes grind for it, to them its the wonder of getting that ultra rare item with the stats you want. others just like to play with there friends, its fun to run tactics for a raid try and beat peoples times. hell there's people that make dance routine videos for this game, if you only like to play a game one time then i actually feel sorry for you.

@neowarrior793: You can go ahead and make up all the definitions you want but if someone told me that a game had 100 hours of game play and it took me 15 hours to play I would be pissed. Then If I ask what this missing content was and the person responds with "what do you mean? did you make your dance video yet?" I would be pissed. Or if he said "let me look at your character.... Oh! I see the problem, yes you played the game fully but you see these numbers here under your gun and ammo stats? You do realize you can make them bigger for no reason at all right?" again, super pissed.
And yes I understand some people actually care about those things and if they find it fun to "dance" in Destiny then go for it. Its a free country. But to claim that those things are actual content and as a result you pad the games game play stats by including such insanely lame bi-products as game play then that is disingenuous.

@doonish: you are still missing the point hell you could probably finish it in 8 hours you can run past half the mobs if you like but that is not universal. iv played taken king on my friends game i haven't played destiny for weeks on end. my friend finished a mission in 10 minutes it took me longer. that's not a reflection of my skill more then he knew where to go and what to do, but claiming if you get to x then the games done stop the clock, that's the end games, is just silly. the content of this game comes down to the individual period, you can claim all you like how you would be "pissed" but it can take longer for less skilled player and shorter for pros that's just the way of it. look at it this way it took this guy 15 hours to finish it i presume that's with 1 character, theres 2 others to play with and i believe they even get there own missions for the subclass, times that by 3 that's 45 hours. then presume you want to get some wepons etc and play pvp that's going to take you 20 hours for all 3 to get the stuff. its true that some things are fixed but i could turn around and say fallout 3 is bad, some speed runner finished it in 30 minutes so i would be "pissed" i'm buying an open world game that only has 30 minutes of content. <--- that right there is your logic.

@neowarrior793: You're just dumb. That's it.

Yes if you played the game fast you can finish it in 8.....DOOOOIII!!!

If you took your time you can finish it in 20..........DOOOOIIII!!!

If you play it twice you can finish it in 30............DOOOOIII!!!

Its a benchmark, we all know this. That's the point! ITS AROUND 15!!! NOT the 100 you threw out there because you played the same shit over and over again and made dance videos (seriously?) and because you think that's fun we should all now accept your definition of what game play is. Save it.

@doonish: "You're just dumb" coming from the guy that basically made an assumption? do you not have basic intelligence? i didn't make a "definition" of game play nor did i claim this game is 100 hours of content for everyone. i'm saying its not a benchmark either its fucking different for everyone, its not the same for you and its not the same for me. people play MGS ground zero for minuets and they play it for hours. just like this game there's plenty of different things to do and it comes down to the person. i have 3 characters i like to have good weapons, Armour and all the skills unlocked that going to take time, the guy who played this probably hasn't done half thoes things if hes new to the game, hell they give you a free lvl 25 jump when you buy the taken king that's probably not factored in with the fact that's there 3 classes for every character. if you want to be stupid then be stupid in your own time but at least have enough common sense to know that the guy who did this review could be a complete noob who was on a time scale to finish or a pro that has polished skills. btw i dont like repetitive game-play anymore then anyone else but there a massive difference between knowing whats in a game and seeing it as a whole then a reviewer who was given a few hours to a game. the fact that you seems to be unable to understand that people are capable of having fun on a game is your biggest problem.

@neowarrior793: And I quote "Destiny gives you 100's of hours of content most game you $60 give you 8 at max." Those are your words and where this all started. Using your logic one can argue that same game that you criticized for paying $60 and getting 8 hours max you can extend its length by playing it over and over again. You can take your time with it. You can dance. You can do whatever you like right? You'll get hundreds of hours of entertainment out of that what you consider 8 hour game right? Yet you labeled that game as only being 8 hours of playtime and you refused to label Destiny as a 15 hour game why? Because you are using two different criteria to support the same argument. When you are defending what you support length of game play means x, when you are comparing it to another game then the definition of that games length of game play is y. The foundation of your argument is weak. You lose I win. No further questions. You may step down my son.

@doonish: no reread that I said and I actually quote "it gave ME 100 hours of game-play" . i haven't said 8 hours nor did i stat anything other, so you and your stupidity is showing because that is what Almighty_ said not me. if you are going to quote someone ACTUALLY get what they said not some random guy who i dont know. the fact that you can't tell the difference between 2 names is more then enough proof of how stupid you truly are. learn to get your FACTS right before spouting nonsense. I'm not even defending this game, i dont even have the taken king for Christ sake i have the vanilla game, my point is and will always be that you can't take what one reviewer said to be the norm for a game. this is a game that varies between people like i stated before, if you are a pro at the game its going to be quicker and if you are new its not going to be the same as what the reviewers does, the fact that the review doesn't cover some newer aspects of the game and weather the level booster was used and such.

my other point is that any game can make its own content, look at GTA V people make stunt videos because its FUN, that extends the play time for some people (not everyone) so for them its a higher playtime, they get 1000+ hours thats their playtime and how much they got. you cannot state "its only 15 hours" for something that i have fun playing and have a higher playtime, no matter what your opinion is. im pretty sure i could (if i wanted to) find a review that has a longer time and spout that as fact, but i not even doing that, im giving my interpretation of destiny's worth to me and gave a reasons for that time 3 character that require all to level to 40 and all 3 classes with there missions that all need max skills and pvp time and items, thats not something that can be done in 15 hours, maybe for one character with one class yes but thats not likely for everyone, actually its highly unlikely.

no matter how you look at this what your saying will never be correct for everyone.

@doonish: yea im one one thats "rambling" when you didn't even know who you where talking too. Don't try and pull this under the rug, you are an idiot and don't know anything about this game, you don't understand about reviews and you certainly don't understand about a games length and how that correlates differently to everyone. go home and read a few books because clearly you have little understanding about much of anything. next time you want to be a big boy and "try" and have some type of argument, learn something about the subject before running your mouth off like a child. I (unlike you) gave examples, levels of understanding, applied logic and used common sense, i didn't take things out of context, nor did i misunderstand who i was talking too (unlike you it seems). grow up and smell the roses, get the dildo out your ass and maybe, just maybe you may learn something useful.

@doonish: if the person was actually "acting" stupid which we have established over the last 8 comments that you are not "acting". you are generally stupid, i'm having to correct a stupid person on the basic principle of your lack of knowledge. i'm educating you in some "hope" (a very strong word to use in this occasion) that no other person will need to endure your lack of brain power.

@thedeadhaverisn: Diablo 3 is absolute garbage I couldn't even play that game for more than an hour before trading that garbage back!

@almighty_: 100s of hours of Destiny? Ouch. Isn't that against rules established at the Geneva Convention?

Joking aside, I got back into it with this last expansion. I played a several main quests (which took me through well-tread zones from a year earlier) and asked a friend who is obsessed with the game what there is to do now..."do bounties," he said.

Ya...this game is going back to Costco.

True story: good gunplay, great cgi scenes, actual characters with dialogue exist now, poor character customization, unbalanced pvp remains, game play still boils down to shoot, reload, shoot some more (fine for a competitive fps, but not a mmo-rpg-lootbased-wannabe), tower is just as dull and lifeless, no LFG system for raids, the lack of a story was replaced by a cliche story, bad, lackluster, uninspired exotics are still the only carrot in game.

At a price point of $40, I couldn't recommend this to anyone.

Imagine a world where someone reads an article about a game he/she enjoys and doesn't have to shift through tons of comments from people who hate the game (for whatever reason) and go out of their way to clutter the comments section for attention.

1. Activision is robbing you guys

2. PC Everything

3. Gamespot Rating Conspiracy Theorists

4. Acting like you personally know the person who reviewed the game

5. People telling others to play (insert game here) instead "Because it's better". People who like this game are playing it... much like how you play the games you like.

Please go somewhere else and talk about games you like with other people who like them too... this is getting exhausting.

Also, the reason gaming websites spam Destiny articles on the front page are because PEOPLE CLICK ON THEM. They have statistics for that stuff. If a lot of people are viewing Destiny articles, you can guarantee they will keep posting them, because thats THE JOB of this website, to post about games people like, and play; get over it and go comment in a section for a game you like and actually contribute to a games community.

@Smooch3000: Just keep in mind that the people who read and write comments are a very different group from the massive audience of general gamers who don't follow much gaming news and probably just see Gamespot articles referenced on many other sites. That's why you have these situations where a successful game gets a lot of hate, it's just the gap between the more "serious" more critical types who analyze the heck out of games and the general consumers who don't. Call of Duty was THE example of this in the past, but Destiny might be taking it's place :).

Also like @mirage_so3 says below, yes you're going to have to get over it because it's not going away :).

@thedeadhaverisn: @ltjohnnyricois right, go to Bungie.net for that... and post it in a forum with similar concerns. Operation Sports is a great example of a amazingly moderated forum managing everything that is wrong with Madden titles every year... and developers read it and respond to people... Destiny comment sections on Gamespot are just poison garbage... I guess I should shut up myself and just stop reading them... problem solved.

@thedeadhaverisn: I agree. One of the reasons I have very little trouble being very critical of Destiny is the PR rhetoric that was being spoon fed to us through gaming websites before launch.

Granted, PR is PR, and I expect some exaggeration and over hype, but for months we were being told that Destiny would revolutionize gaming and be unlike anything we'd ever seen, and essentially be the pinnacle of gaming.

Those are some lofty aspirations, and it is very clear that Destiny fell drastically short. It's a visually well crafted game, and has good shooter mechanics, but that can be said about many games. The story is not engaging and the gameplay quickly gets repetitive. The game is a huge grind and because the loot system gets revamped every couple of months a hardcore gamer's hundreds of hours of tedious grind on older versions can be matched in little time with the expansions....

@masscrack: Oh okay, I'm sure Bungie will just stop making the game if you do it enough... you know, after they broke Playstations download records for The Taken King... that will happen really soon I bet.

@Smooch3000: It's the internet. Get over it. The fact is there are different view points for everything. Some people are dicks about their viewpoint and they draw the most attention because who cares if someone wrote up a thoughtful review of a game that gave good points, that doesn't give you something to bitch about.

@mirage_so3: I don't disagree, I was just saying it's exhausting... I said it above, I think the real solution is to just enjoy the game and find a better forum to talk about the game.

I really want Destiny to be excellent. I've wanted to get into it, but with the lack of PS4-XBox crossplay, I just don't have the friends to play with, and the fact that the grind starts quickly turns me off. I applaud Bungie for really trying hard on this. RPGs are not their native strength, but they're getting better.

Gamespot shows where a lot of the $500 million went. Good reviews and opinions. This is the annual Destiny, they cleverly disguised it by not putting a "2" on it but it clearly is, hence the idiotic price. And after a while it has the same flaws from before: gets repetitive and boring.

Game becomes repetitive after 15 hours, and not much variety to support the late-game grind.

Many quests are still taxing, with chore lists and boring objectives to complete.

Same 2 reasons why I left in the 1st place. No reason to go back.

I expect a response from Destiny's #1 Fanboy CaptWaffle

For all the big things that Destiny misses, its the small things it does right that bring me back. I've played Diablo 1-3, borderlands and similar loot based games. I also don't claim to really be a fan of FPS. And maybe its because I never cared about Halo that I am willing to cut the game slack, but the detail in the art and sound design and the shooting mechanics are some of the best in any game I've played. Putting the story in cards you had to read online was lame, but the world you inhabit is so visually interesting that I actually sought out context in the cards. It may not have been whatever is was that people were expecting, but the pop of a precision shot or the crackle of a super provides a visceral satisfaction that is hard to match.

@ycranger: Great explanation of what you enjoy about the game.

I agree about the headshot satisfaction in this game. Only gears of War comes close to matching that enoyment. Gears just does it in a much bloodier fashion lol.

After been in the Dreadnaught, you really don't wanna visit the other places again, they should have redone all the other places and made it more active like Dreadnaught is.
