This game was actually very detailed, some real care has gone into how this looked. And by detailed i mean (and remember the consoles just arrived) brickwork, dust, sign posts and housing and general look and feel of the game. The graphics are crisp and very well drawn. It can look alittle dreary at times and it has a distinct old skool look and feel toto it. Plenty of colour, its hard to describe its like one of those old 1970's school movie from a projector !! But that only adds to the mayhem already going on around you.
Sound is good with alien screech's, some really nice shooting sounds, pick up the alien pulse rifle it sounds wicked. Its all very atmospheric.
Gameplay is frantic and fast, very fast paced. The ai from the alien race is beautiful, they ll run and hide, peer round corners and shoot or wait till you pass and ambush you!! It keeps it all fresh and non repetitive. Just the feel of the pulse rifle is enough to wet yourself!! It has a replay button (like in the fifth element, bruce willis) you fire a tag, stand round the corner and fire!! every shot goes to the tag no matter where it is, simply awesome! Varied levels and scenery keep this fresh even today, as stated some real effort went into the look and feel of this. The drones (enemies) arnt sluggish and stupid, they react rather quickly and always in numbers!! One dissapointment i had was the "jeep" level near the end was a little drap, infact its bloody awful, they could have done a lot better there, but still fun to play. Duel guns and some intresting alien weaponary keep this alive, not that it needs to its manic!! I cannot get accross how many enemies this throws at you (especially on hard) and they hate you haha!! Imagine alien 2 (ridley scott) and the pulse rifle in that!! With, online, usual play, but whats this from such an early game....split screen play with your old pal, buddy, chum!! Bring a friend and then have some fun, opens up this game and really licks the competetion. Weel done fellas at insomniac games for this one, not many developers get it yet!!
With a projector look to it and some really clever ai and the sheer feel of this, aliens everywhere and they wont stop makes it a classic, and split screen play, enough said!!. Ive played it through a number of times and still dont get bored. Its probably around 5-10 quid now, dont pay anymore.
