Now THIS...is a version of "Resident Evil 4" I can play!

Positives:

  • A version of Resident Evil 4 without tank controls! Hallelujah!
  • Finally having a version of the game where I can move and shoot and not fight with the controls helps me to appreciate the game a lot more.
  • I like that they integrated the horror elements a bit more here compared to the original game.
  • Swooning over the controls aside, the combat as a whole is so much more gratifying this time around.
  • They really made a lot of improvements to other unpopular parts of the original (taking out QTEs, making Ashley a bit easier to bring around now).
  • Visually, it's a truly beautiful game; the original obviously looked amazing, but this is also fantastic and really adds to the sense of atmosphere.
  • Despite all the changes, it still preserves a lot of what made the original so beloved.
  • Added more to the characterizations, making them even more interesting to follow now.
  • Did I mention you can move and shoot at the same time now? Yes? Good, just wanted to say it again.

Negatives:

  • I don't know if it's just me but I found myself getting lost a bit more, and the open-ended nature of the game kinda made it a bit harder to navigate at some points.
  • Those goddamn bear traps!!!!!

Consensus: This is more like it! When I first tried to play the original "Resident Evil 4" back in 2021, I understood how it became so innovative and revolutionary, but I couldn't bear to fight through the stiff control scheme that was pretty much "tank controls" but with a few light differences. Once the remake was announced, though, I was pretty excited about the prospect of being able to play the game without having to fight with the controls. Boy, was the wait worth it; "Resident Evil 4" (the remake) is a fantastic game. Beyond the improved control scheme, they really managed to improve on the original experience and add necessary changes, while preserving what made the first one so beloved. Even if it's not my favorite of the remakes (that still goes to "Resident Evil 2"), this is another amazing entry in the "Resident Evil" series that comes very highly recommended.
