As Clarence Carter once said, "I be Strokin'." Definitely a stroke in the right direction for golf games.

First of all, I've only spent about 3 hours on this game, but my initial reaction is positive. As you've heard from numerous sources to this point, the graphics leave alot to be desired. But, the reason I picked this game up is because I want realism in how the game is PLAYED, not in how it LOOKS.

So far, it delivers. The myriad ways you are permitted to address the ball allow you to hit any shot you can think of, although you may not do it succesfully. The hardest thing to master, to this point, has been the coordination of the left and right analog sticks. The left stick simulates your weight transfer and the right your swing motion. If you are successful in timing the two together, your ball will fly it's maximum distance. Whether it's straight or not is another story.

There is one thing that has frustrated me so far. I, when playing "real" golf, prefer to use my 7 iron around the green to chip on. The computer default selection is a LW. I can change to the 7-I but, as I move the target flag back to the green, it automatically changes the club to a LW. The cool thing is, I can still move the ball back in my stance and push my hands forward (thereby closing the face down) and simulate the 7-I chip I prefer.

I haven't tried a tourney or career mode, so I have no report on those features. I have created 2 holes on the course editor. My goal is to build my home course - just to see how flexible and comprehensive the editing tools are. After playing with the interface for awhile, it becomes rather simple to use. It seems that you can build a fairly accurate represenation of your home course, given time. However, there are a couple things that have frustrated me with it so far, but I'll again reserve judgment until I've given it more time.

So, if you're looking for mind-blowing graphics, stick with Tiger. But, if you want to stand over the ball and have the same swing-thoughts you have when you're playing a real game of golf, this is the game. You will find yourself analyzing every shot just as you would if you were out there on the links yourself. The only thing that's missing is the "throw club across the fairway" button.
