Origins in Africa There are many ancient card games that have their roots in Africa. Suites consisted of Bowls, Treasures, Coins, Swords, or Stakes, while others used Catheters and Stools. Early Europeans were also the first to use symbols from other people, with six being the norm instead of the usual four. This tradition continues to this day with many African cultures using different pictographs for identification purposes.

Egypt is another possible origin. Many of the earliest Egyptian cards were made out of precious metals. These cards were often carved in the form of animals. Egypt evolved into the modern game we know today. This is similar to many primitive card games. While it is unlikely that Egyptians ever played solitaire again, it is possible that they played a variant on a matching game using sets matching playing cards.

European Settlements European card games evolved from voyages to Central and Western Africa. These early players used three cards to represent each of four locations they traveled to. Each player would then use the same suit from each suit to try and form pairs that represent the cities or towns they had visited. These games were dominated by hearts, but they could also have used spades, clubs or diamonds. The suit, known as "ces", has been popular throughout the years.

Other Origins. The game we know today was not created from the board games we now see. Although many of these principles still exist, there were many materials that were used. They were still round but had raised edges like cardboard or were bowls shaped like peas that could be stored. The first set of playing cards was made of wood sourced from trees in Asia and Africa. The materials used for the earliest sets were often very rough and granular.

Development Over the centuries, playing card technology evolved and was used for many different purposes. They began as simple cards made from wood. They can sometimes be adorned with worn ivory to give them a more elegant appearance. They were wrapped in felt or cloth to protect them from dirt stains.
