The majority of electric warm water heaters in our homes have two thermostats and two coils that heat the upper and lower portion of the tank. Additionally, there are some models which have three heating elements which further complicates things. That said the right approach to diagnosing and fixing the thermostat helps make things a lot easier.

Check the low and upper thermostats

You need to start both checking both the upper and lower thermostats. You can check the upper element at both terminals that are on the top. Use a volt meter to check if there is 220V reaching the terminals. If honeywell thermostat won't turn on heat have a reading that is either fluctuating or is quite low then it means that there isn't enough power reaching the coil. This can require that the thermostat regarding that coil be changed.

Changing the thermostat

In order to take out and put in the brand new thermostat turn off the energy to the unit, then unscrew the access plate. Remove both the lower and upper access plates. Some models have one screw while others have two. Make sure to save the insulation that pops out for when you fix the plate back. It would also be considered a good idea to eliminate the plastic covers from both the thermostats.

Checking for faults in the circuit

Before you can check the circuits for faults turn the breaker or the electricity on. Using a volt meter check each point of the coils and make sure that current is flowing to them. That said ensure that you do not set the thermostat to the red limit.

Turn the knob of your thermostat to first 'A' or '1' four five minutes and watch which coil turns on. Then transform it to 'B' or '2' and then 'C' or '3' etc. Each time watch which coils come on. If there is one coil or both coils that do not turn on throughout this technique this means that the thermostat must be changed.

Changing the thermostat

Taking right out the old thermostat is simple. You just need to pull on the bracket slightly until you start to see the wires behind it. Remove each wire and remember where each wire went. Then take the thermostat to a supply store in your area and ask them for a replacement. So that you can put back the new thermostat simply reverse what you did. Always check the wires to ensure they are fit snugly into the thermostat. It is possible to fasted loose wires with some wire tape. Then push the thermostat back and turn the machine on.
