A "spendthrift clause" in a life insurance policy is something that can negatively affect the benefits that you are entitled to receive on your death. This is a clause that can be found in a policy that was originally taken out when a person was young and healthy. In many cases the policy is still in effect even though the insured has begun to age and have various medical issues that can prove to be a burden on him or her should they die. The terms of these clauses can be quite harsh in that the insured may be required to pay all of the costs that were not covered by the original contract should he or she die.

Often times a short period of time will be required for the change to take effect. There are other times when the entire policy may have to be changed. When a spendthrift clause is found in a policy, there are often other things that need to be done to make sure the policy is paid off.

There are several ways that the proceeds from a policy can be used. A good way to ensure that money is put to use is to make sure that a particular policy holder dies before an option to receive a payout is triggered. If the person who is insured dies before the payout is due, the insurance company will still be obligated to pay a certain amount to the beneficiaries. This can include a clause stating that the policy can only be used to pay for certain medical treatments that are deemed necessary. Addendum clauses are often listed at the end of a life insurance policy.
