I have a friend that is willing to sell me his code for halo reach that he never used for cheaper than microsoft sells it for. My question is: If I buy this code, will I be able to redeem it on xbox one?

I went off to college this year and didn't bring my xbox one (regular version) with me because my brother still plays it at home. I've had more time on my hands than I thought and I'm really interested in buying my own console to have at school. I don't have a 4k TV and graphics don't mean that much to me so the S sounds appealing due to price. My only concern with this is that I would prefer to get the newer, more powerful system as I would most likely have it for a while. I have enough money to afford both but I am sort of hesitant to drop $500 for a gaming console. What do you guys recommend?
I would highly recommend going back to the xbox. I've been a fan of the systems microsoft has pushed out all my life and I think, especially with the xbox one x, microsoft has the advantage over the ps4.
I'm planning on getting either Halo 5 next or Halo wars 2 since I loved the first one. I think 5 will come first though.
I've been an xbox fan all my life. I started with the OG xbox and have owned everything up to the one. I have continued to stick with xbox due to friends having the console and mostly due to the excellent Halo series.
