@Meta_Dragon @moleyUK ...and it's that very improvement that you can't think of right now that someone else is inevitably going to come up with.
Then we'll all say "Of course. Such a simple idea, why didn't someone think of that before?"
That's how innovation often works.
But we only get to that stage if people are able to study, iterate and improve upon what has come before. Even if it's just to say, "I definitely don't want to do it that way."
An attitude of "Well, there's already a game that does that so I couldn't possibly improve on that so-called 'perfection'" really only serves to promote a climate of stagnation.
Even the very things that are being emulated in these games are constantly improving in real life.
So there is always room for for improvement and progress in every genre especially now with the advent of the new generation of consoles and PCs giving creatives a more powerful outlet for their work.
@Meta_Dragon Do we really need any new games? There have been many thousands of games released already over the past 30-odd years.
If a dev team came up with a game that they believed improved upon all the features of a genre and took it to another dimension, would you prohibit them from releasing it because there are already 2 other games in that genre?
How long would they have to wait for the current games in the genre to "expire" before they release a new game, or would you have a finite number of games allowed and that genre is then locked in perpetuity?
