While I do enjoy more open or sandbox games, I always feel like the story for those games is more up to your imagination than the game. For example, when I play Fallout 3, I'm neither good or evil or neutral, I just go where I feel like and do what I feel like and in the end, the ending movie is never going to get your character right on. Because of this, I've always preferred linear games. Linear games play like the usual mediums for storytelling: books and movies. The story is already written and you get to go for a ride; from the beginning you know who your character is and what he/she will do. If you want video games to be accepted as a medium for storytelling, they should emulate those mediums that are already in place. I'm not saying that you can't tell a story well with a sandbox game, I just think you need to cover too many holes to do it as well as a linear game.
