M$ knows that people think they're getting a deal if they spend over $400 spread out across several payments than if they spend $400 for one item even if that one item comes with more features than you would get by spending $400 on several items. Consumers really are gullible.

Crytek, Ensemble (now defunct), and now Id.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6207773.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;1

GS:So do you guys still consider yourself first and foremost a PC developer?

TH:Well, actually it's been a fundamental, sort of philosophical shift at the company, is that we really have transitioned from, first and foremost, a PC developer to a multiplatform developer. And so when John [Carmack] developed id Tech 5 (see below), it really was targeted from the initiation as a multiplatform technology solution.

Now, there's no question that our roots are in PC gaming. And when I play a first-person shooter, keyboard and mouse is the configuration that I want to play on. I'm devoting my gaming time right now on the PC to Quake Live. I like a little Rock Band on the console, to be honest about it. But we feel like, in terms of your triple-A, big-budget, big-market title, that you really have to be cross-platform to be successful, unless you're a first party.

So as an independent developer, we feel like we have to be on all the relevant platforms. So we don't really view ourselves as PC first. I think I would say that John says that probably the primary development platform for Rage is actually the 360.

GS:OK. Now, how do you see the PC landscape changing in the next couple of years? Do you see it becoming almost all digital downloads?

TH:Well, I think that's an interesting question. I don't know really where it's going to go. But there's a few problems you have in PC gaming right now that cause friction in the marketplace. Piracy is abigproblem. And I've gone on and on about that, so I don't think I need to underscore what the issue there is.

The other thing is, is that retailers are more focused on consoles than they are on the PC platform, primarily, I think, because Microsoft is campaigning for the 360, probably to some extent to the expense of Windows-based games. Even though they have their whole Games for Windows initiative today, it's a lot less than it was a year ago. Clearly the 360 is where their big bet is. And, of course, Sony could care less about the PC.

So retailers are devoting less shelf space to PC games than they were in the past, and there's more emphasis on the consoles. And, to get the big huge marketing budgets behind games you need to make them a huge success. If you're on PC, there's World of Warcraft, the Sims--and there's everything else, if you're not multiplatform.

So the question is, what is the solution? If you do an end run around retail, and you deliver it all digitally, is that going to be the solution? Are you going to deliver it through a browser, like Quake Live? Is it going to be a different market? Are you going to do microtransactions? I think the jury's out on all that.

I do believe that for PC games to be successful independently, as our experiment with Quake Live is, I think you have to do something a little bit different. I mean, you have to think about what your market is and where you're going and what you can deliver. Because even though they may have had critical success, games that have been PC-only haven't achieved the same sales success as titles of similar quality in the past would have achieved.

Dead Space is a solid 9/10. I've only played the demo for Uncharted (I'm buying it soon), but I have a feeling it's going to be higher than a 9 when I'm done.

Also, 48% of the people who visit this message board agree that the 360 has the worst line up of exclusives for 2009:

Wow, you really came to the wrong place for that.:(

Agreed, there are better places to ask that, around here we bash consoles.

yeah, the only answers you're likely to get here are:

"360 sucks, get a PS3"

"PS3 sucks, get a 360"

"They both suck, get a Wii."

"Consoles suck, build a gaming PC."

And the ever so helpful:

"Get the one that has the most exclusives you want."

That said, 360 sucks, get a PS3. :P

If you already have a gaming PC, most 360 exclusives can be played on PC with very few exceptions. And most of those exceptions are shooters like Gears of War 2 and Halo 3. So unless you REALLY want Halo 3 and Gears of War 2, you might be better off with a PC and PS3.

But aside from games and price, there are also features and additional costs to consider.

PS3 comes with free built in wi-fi for wireless internet if that sounds appealing. A wireless adapter for the 360 is sold separately and costs $100 brand new.

With a PS3, you don't have to pay to play online unlike Xbox Live, which costs $50 per year.

PS3's blu-ray drive is awesome if you have a good HD TV for watching movies and gaming.

PS3 is very flexible and compatible with 3rd party products. You can slap in any old PC hard drive to boost your PS3's RAM to a ridiculous amount if you want like 1.5 TB for $149. The 360 forces you to select from only 2 hard drives made by Microsoft, both of which are overpriced and small compared to what the PS3 comes with. PS3's controllers also use USB cables, so they can be charged by plugging them into a USB port in any computer that is turned on. PS3 also comes with an 80gb or 160gb hard drive. You have to buy the hard drives separate for the 360.

PS3 also has a built in web browser. Microsoft won't let you browse the internet on the 360. PS3 can also run linux operating systems if you want a better web browser.

And then there are other little features that may or may not matter much to you:

Playstation Home: a place where avatars can hang out, chat, play games, etc. It's still in beta, so there isn't a whole lot to do there yet, but it's slowly getting better. You can play pool, bowling, arcade games, chess, poker, and other mini games. There is also a shopping mall and other interesting areas.

Digital photograph album: You can store and display your digital pictures on the PS3.

There's a lot more than I can list really, but those are probably the main features.
