This announcement was expected; however, I's concerned. I love video games. I possess every system known to man and women (Yes, I possess a Neo-Geo and a Turbo Express). I have an Xbox 360 and planning to buy (eventually) a PS3. The situation for this generation is the exact opposite from the last generation (Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PS2). In the last generation, Sony established themselves as a industry leader with the PS1. Everyone was salivating for the PS2. With the initial shortage of systems and a great line-up of third party games, it only drove up the desire for the system. Microsoft entered the market with this perception, "These idiots will buy anything; just make more games." Sony ruled and Microsoft got spanked. Approximately two years into the Xbox/PS2 generation (No, I'm not knocking the Gamecube), Microsoft changed it strategy. They began to focus on the quality of games. I purchased my Xbox when Sega released Panzer Dragoon. The games only improved from that point. I still bought games for my PS2 (favorites: God of War, GTA (III, VC, and SA), Tekken, etc..). When it came to getting games for either system (Star Wars Battlefront II), I purchased it on the Xbox (better graphics, game play, and sound). The only exception, was the Madden franchise (I just loved kicking my little brothers butt on the PS2.) Fast forward to last year. Microsoft made significant improvements to their platform. They understood how important quality not quantity was to the average gamer (I will generally buy 1-4 games a month). There was initial problems with some of the systems (that is understandable.....how many people had problems with their IPOD's (not me); however, have to acknowledge it.) Some of the first generation games were decent; however, they were first generation games. Only a handful of games (examples: Prey, GRAW, Oblivion, and Dead or Alive 4) would graze the definition of a second generation game. I still don't see a Bratz game for the 360 (Yes, this is a good thing). It has been almost 1 year since the 360 has been released. We are still waiting for a "real" second generation games. The announcements and problems at Sony (recently) scares me. They had to recall ~1.5 million batteries from DEL notebooks (I'm not blaming the engineering department; however, I'm surprised this problem got through quality assurance and to the public). There have been reports of problems (Yes, old info from last year) with the Cell CPU. There is (Last I heard) a major legal battle with Sony about the use and rights of Blu-Rey technology (Don't get me wrong; I'm in the Blu-Rey camp). Sony Postponed their "Spring 06" release date. Now they will "Limit" the quantity of PS3's in November (Sorry: Europe, Australia, Africa, South America, North America (except USA), and Asia (except Japan)). How does the software developers feel about this? How long will it be before we see a second generation game on the PS3? Will Sony release the PS3 just to say, "It is on the market!"? How many problems will they have with the initial release of the PS3 (remember the backlash when people's 360's went down.) Things don't look good for PS3. My greatest wish is the PS3 is video game crack. The jury is still out. If there are no significant problems with the PS3, it will be in my hands ~1 year from now.
