@wolfpup7: I think people sometimes forget that not everyone has a 1440p or 4K monitor or a 4K TV, and if someone doesn't have those things then they don't need to pay for all that power that's doing nothing for them. You can get downsampling and increased framerates with fewer resources in a much cheaper package when things are being rendered at 1080p. The real question is how are they going to market it to that point?

@mogan: I definitely agree with that, or at least they got offered enough to force them to think about how much MS offered them vs. how much an untested IP from an indie developer could make on its own. Little did they know...

@mogan: I never said that it didn't sell well. I just said it wasn't smart to cut out the console with the highest install base so they could have sold more.

@mogan: Doing timed exclusivity against the console with the largest install base wasn't the brightest idea to begin with. Difficult, quirky, interesting art style - those things scream Playstation and it would have made them so much more money... 3 years ago. While they'll definitely get some sales out of this, it won't be near as much as they could have since a lot of gamers have played this on other platforms already and enough of them prefer not to double dip.

@firedrakez: MS doubled their studios because they were severely lacking in quantity and quality. Sony doesn't have that problem so going on a studio buying spree isn't a high priority. Right now, Sony should be worried about their cloud and streaming strategy, not studios, or have people forgotten that Sony games do extremely well every single generation since the first Playstation?

@jbcrazed: lol Yeah, Cerny can definitely kill the energy of a presentation. I felt the same way during the PS4 deep dive. Like you said, Sony should hype the hell out of their games whenever they actually reveal the console, and they should probably leave Cerny at home for that one.

@jbcrazed: I get what you're saying, I just don't think Cerny is the guy they would put up there for PR spin. There will be tons of articles breaking this shizz down, though what was revealed was pretty straight forward. Also, I only brought up the PS2 and PS3 as references on how little power can mean in a generation, not to imply that either one will beat the other in the next gen. Personally, as impressive as it is the Series X is written off to me. I have my PC so XBox "exclusives" are covered. Just need that PS5 for those true exclusives and next gen will be taken care of. At least until Nintendo puts out whatever gimmicky console they're going to follow the Switch with.

@jbcrazed: Actually when shit gets tough it's about the games. Games are what pulled the PS3 out of the gutter, and games are what rocketed the weak PS2 to ridiculous sales numbers. I definitely think the Series X will out-muscle the PS5. I just don't think it'll be as significant a difference as gamers saw between the vanilla versions of XB1 and PS4.

@jbcrazed: Number fudging? What are you talking about? Cerny gave the exact same kind of talk regarding the PS4. That's just his presentation style. Always has been. He's a systems guy first, developer 2nd and his speeches are typically more for the tech savvy, leaving it to tech journalists to decipher and disseminate the info in a more digestible form to the masses. Besides, what the hell was he supposed to say? "The system's weaker on paper. Who wants a P5?" The power of systems is usually only made out to be a huge issue online. The PS2 was the weakest of its generation but is the best selling console of all time. The PS3 was a nightmare to develop for and 3rd party games looked and ran worse on it than the 360, and it still came back and outsold the 360 in the end. People will go where ever the games they want to play are.

@jbcrazed: Actually, there were two issues, one being the price compared to power issue that you pointed out. The other though is the actual drop in fidelity and performance that came along with the weaker tech and I think it's here that we need to really see how this pans out for the PS5. As was said during this presentation, FLOPS aren't everything and there seems to be a ton of thought put into clearing and avoiding bottlenecks, which can hamper performance even on PC. It's a bit like asking do you want one guy that benches 350lbs carrying something super heavy or go with 3 smaller people that can collectively carry the same weight but distribute it more evenly and protect the structural integrity of the object so that it's not damaged by it's own mass. Of course, it's all theoretical right now but it would make the most sense given that not too long ago developers said that they were getting better results from the PS5 dev kit than the series X's. On paper the X is definitely more powerful, but if the PS5 is more efficient and has more tools then it could make a significant difference. Who the hell knows at this point but it sounds like it's going to be a fun generation either way.
