Okay. Look at it this way. These popularity contests are NOT made by gamers, and are NOT for gamers. They are made for the casuals to squeeze that little bit of add revenue out. Dark Souls wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell to win because it's a hard game that most casuals won't touch with a ten foot pole because they suck at games and don't want to put any effort into playing them. Why do you think CoD sells so well? They don't care about gamers, as they aren't the market they want. They want the masses. And as time has proven numerous times, the masses consist largely of live in the moment ADHD (no offense to people who actually suffer from it and have to deal with all these idiots behaving like they have it) simpletons. Europa Univeralas, AI Wars, ARMA, IL 1946, Neverwinter, Victoria 2, Dwarf Fortress, Space Station 13, etc. are games made for gamers. All awards shows are like this. They are not made for people who truly enjoy it. They are made for the masses. Honestly, just ignore award shows. You'll feel a lot better. Think of them like that bestseller bull they have on books. It's utterly meaningless to anyone who uses their head on a regular basis. They're trying to get people who don't stop to think or plain old don't want to. I want to make something clear however before my inbox gets spammed once again and once again I ignore all of it. Simple brainless games like CoD, BF, DA, ME, Skyrim, etc. do have their place. They're good when you've got half an hour to an hour to do something. But as games they are lacking in quality and any sort of challenge. Especially online. What I'm getting at is that I'm not saying that just because you play them means you're not a gamer and simply a casual. Rather, if you consider those games your staple games you aren't a gamer. Casuals get attacked so much because they truly are ruining our hobby. You've barged in and taken over. And we've essentially been given the finger and told to go f*** ourselves. And it's highly impractical for anyone to make a big budget game made for us because everyone wants CoDhuge profits right away and never even consider the long term nor devoted fans. This all leads into problems with society as a whole but that's a story for another time.Vangaurdius
Dude, I'm a casual. I love the **** out of Call of Duty (at least the IW games) and don't play games for more than 45 minutes a day. UNTIL I got Dark Souls. I've spent 60 hours into that game and I'm only half done. I intend to put in another 60 hours easy. I never really got into RPGs and open world games until I played Dark Souls. I got into gaming just a year ago and this game has me hooked. What I'm saying it is that "casuals" aren't the problem. I think Dark Souls can appeal to anyone looking for a challenge. I don't believe Casuals are ruining gaming but it's the PC gaming elitist snobs that are doing it.

I'm frankly a little disgusted that Gamespot chose to nominate Crysis 2 over MW3.

Well for one thing, the challenge it provides is a difficult but a fair one. For example, The first Black Knight that you encounter is extremely powerful and you don't really need to beat it. But with a little strategy it is possible to beat it. It takes time, patience and responsiveness to beat it and when you do you feel awesome and get a really nice item as a reward.

This feeling carries on throughout the game, and it doesn't get boring since the areas are very different from each other, and so are the enemies you encounter (for the most part). The combat is precise and simple, but not boring. And the game has very few bugs or glitches that take away from the experience. It's sort of the same feeling you get when playing SoTC, i.e. Going up against insurmountable odds and coming out victorious. It often serves as a metaphor for all the difficult stuff you've bested in life, though that maybe thinking too much into it. This combined with a fairly simple but interesting mythology/story makes it more satisfying than anything.

I haven't played Dark Souls and the reason being is that I found the first game to be more tedious than challenging, more repetitive than fun, environments to be souless and uninteresting, story to be non existent and the overall battle system be rather clunky. The main reason for me trying out the first games was due to the exceptionally high praise however, in my time playing I found it to be quite the opposite. The same pattern is occurring for the sequel.

To each his own I suppose. But I will say this, I went into Dark Souls as a casual shooter fan and it really managed to draw me in. That's beside the point though. The point is that do you think Skyrim is really better than Dark Souls? And Do you think that Crysis 2 deserved to be nominated instead of MW3?

I'm no Skyrim fan, I hate it right now because Ps3 has the sh*t version...but Dark Souls and Demon's Souls are the 2 most overrated games ever. I don't know what's so great about them. Just my opinion though.

I concur. I never understood why such a poor excuse for a game was so highly accoladed. At times it seemed as if the game was made with the least amount of effort.

Yep. Plus Skyward Sword, Batman Arkham City, and Mass Effect 2 are way better than those games.....even better than Skyrim in my opinion.

Exactly, I'm finding it quite difficult to believe that Skryim is better than all these games from the gameplay videos and reviews I've seen.

No i think that *this year* they didn't give to to Dark Souls solely because Skyrim was more popular.

Basically I think they gave Skyrim the GOTY in most fields because it's popular. And they did not want to sway from the popular opinion. Why I think this is because Crysis 2 was nominated for best shooter instead of MW3. Call me butthurt but do you really think that Crysis 2 was a better game than MW3? MW3 has better controls, better campaign, more offline modes and gameplay and the better multiplayer. I don't think it deserved to be GOTY but it was still better than Crysis 2!

What do you think about this?
