Apple gave Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fisher its much-coveted iPhone Game of the Year award on Tuesday and Frogmind's silhouetted platformer Badland was awarded the iPad award. With App Store exposure so important to an app's success, the awards are huge victories for the two indie studios, which are both run by just two people.
The duos fought off the competition of major studios like 2K Games and EA PopCap with runners-up spots going to XCOM Enemy Unknown and Plants vs. Every little helps Zombies 2. International Directory Kevin Ng's rollercoaster-puzzler The Impossible Road and the clever wordplay Simogo's Device 6 also picked up runners-up awards.
If you thought those awards, though well-deserved, were a smidge predictable be prepared for more uninspiring news: This year's most downloaded free app (not just games but all apps) was Candy Crush Saga, while Minecraft: Pocket Edition was the top-selling paid app of 2013. It's important to note that even though Candy Crush Saga is free-to-download, it was also the top-grossing app of 2013 The app that made the most money was Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Minecraft: Pocket Edition came in 11th place.
