More than ten years after its release, a rare early version of Minecraft was believed to have been lost. Minecraft Alpha 1.1.1 was released in September 2010 for the original Java Edition. It was only available for three hours. Gaming historians have discovered it.
Over the years there have been hundreds upon hundreds of Minecraft versions. Fans have meticulously gathered and archived a lot of them to preserve. Yourbestbet , Alpha 1.1.1, or Seecret Saturday was believed to be lost. While it introduced fishing rods and sneaking to Minecraft but was later discovered to have a game-breaking glitch that would turn the screen completely gray, so was replaced in a matter of hours by version 1.1.2.
@lunasorcery on Kotaku and Kotaku, shared the entire story of its rediscovery on Twitter. As Luna describes that Alpha 1.1.1 was a cult or even a holy grail in the Minecraft archiving Discord Omniarchive, and none of them had ever expected to find it.
Someone stumbled across one of Luna's old tweets, and asked her about it, and she was able to find an old backup of minecraft.jar dated the same as Alpha 1.1.1's release date - September 18, 2010. Luna looked over the file and confirmed that it was Alpha 1.1.1, which she then posted on Omniarchive - which blew up.
So I posted in the Omniarchive server, and it's an understatement to say that a few people noticed.
The reactions are enough to make you realize how important this discovery is. I literally start shaking.
