.......................The 'war' was over when HD DVD died. Bad analogy, try another.Indie_Hitman

You clearly flunked out of your classics units. You have no idea who King Pyrrhus was. Or what a Pyrrhic victory is. It would be fine to disagree whether or not Sony has suffered a pyrrhic vicory, but saying it is a bad analogy because the war is over is really, really stupid.

Thanks, to everyone who posts about their view on blu-ray sales. I appreciate the information.

This is what COH was supposed to be, but failed at it. However, I am not interested in super hero customization knock offs. Especially, when I know that they will do everything they can to prevent me from actually making the superheroes and/or villians I actually want. If you want to make a Spiderman charactrer you can bet you will be hamstrung by the character creation system so that you don't actually succeed. This is a problem they won't be able to overcome. It happened in COH, I know I tried it and cancelled my subscription because of it.

Until the Marvel and/or DC online universes are available as MMOs (including some customization) count me out of this lame boxed-in genre.

I wish they would just give up on the idea already.

Tell me the truth, how many of you PS3 guys actually buy a significant amount of blu-ray dvds. Hardly any. ****Why? Because they cost more than DVDs and don't provide enough of a difference to justify the increased costs. Which is the same reason that MS lost the HD-DVD market position, not solely because of the Blu-ray being included in the PS3, but because of that price/performance problem inherent in the hi-def DVD business.****

Microsoft is enjoying the advantage of getting to drop the production costs of having to support a HD-DVD manufacturing and marketing division. So, they are that much more profitable overall than Sony, in the short term and the long term.

One poster already said it best, but I will tweak it, Sony won the hi-definition DVD battle but lost the high definition DVD war. There are no spoils, just ongoing unrecoupable costs.

Funny, how ironic this is.

*****UPDATE: I think I have been proved wrong about this part of my OP. There is a justifiable difference between Blu-ray and DVDs. But there is a price problem still, in that although there is a definate difference, blu-ray is significantly better, people aren't convinced they should have to pay for it.

As for it being a pyhirric victory for Sony. I think this aspect of the post is valid and should be debated. Blu-ray did shoot up the cost of the PS3 and by winning the battle with MS over high definition Sony has to bear the cost of manufacturing such function. But MS was relieved of having to produce any more HD drives (external of course) so the MS bottom line has improved. Also calculate in the fact that although blu-ray is a growing format, it is not necessarily driving PS3 sales. Rather, stand alone Blu-ray players are growing in great numbers. This puts Sony in a negative position. They bear the cost of a blu-ray player but don't see a great benefit from it. Therefore, winning the battle with MS over high definition was a pyhirric victory.

That is debateable of course, and why I posted it in the first place. It is pretty cool that as of writing this there are 93 posts. Thanks for the information, I have learned a lot. Go ahead and insult and flame me, it's okay: this is the gamespot.com system wars thread, I mean: THIS IS SPARTA!!!!

I would like to report false advertising. I was using the Zeno Clash page and I noticed this :

Sponsored Links
Testers Wanted
Participate and Get a Free Wii, DS & SuperSmash Brothers Game Package

http://yourbranddealz.com/wiibrawl/?lid=::go_CntSuperSmash(wiibrawl)&nopop=1

I thought I was going to be taken to a "beta tester" offering. But instead this is just another "rewards" offering where you supposed to sign up for a couple of offers and if you comply you might get the video game.

This has nothing to do with "testers." Obviously, they are hoping that we, video game fans, will be enticed by the possibility of getting to be a "tester" of a video game. This is a vide game fan website and any offers for testers will be interpreted as offers for beta testing.

Howerver, completing offers for products and services is not "testing" anything. By completing an offer you are just signing up for available products and services, there is no product or services being "tested" as a "tester."

Gamespot.com has enough problems with it's credibility concerning advertiser and therefore, gamespot.com should not be involveed in false and misleading advertising.

Please remove this type advertising on the site.

Can the demo be downloaded in the US by doing this:http://www.ripten.com/2007/07/30/create-foreign-accounts-on-your-ps3-download-content-available-outside-your-region/.

Also, it is legal. If this has been said or asked before, forgive me because I don't have the time to read through a slew of messages in a completely random topic.

Subtopics are necessary--gamespot editors. It is a stupid idea to cram everything under one heading, that is an opinion.

ummm... im srry dude,.... but something you wrote kind of struck me.... i mean... how can u say that home is a "Wii/Second Life" customization scheme... i have to disagree.... Home is basically Sims..... but free lol, you tont have to pay for expansions.... i mean seriously. compare the prices... Free compared to like 30 bux... its a good deal... and honestly if you jsut buy what your gonna use, theres no way to be ripped of unless your an avatar paris hilton who needs every article of clothing or furnature known to man.... i mean at max your probably gonna spend 5 dolars max for like 2 outfits.... if you even care what your character looks like. as for the games, there free and just used to waste your time, like the flash helicopter game n stuff.... so you cant get to pissy with it lol... but besides any of the points you made... home is more a form of networking between players to find friends and start games... not an actual game... but whatever... paecetruthbetoldalex

There is nothing free about home. You are there to be bathed in advertising. But I wonder why go there, because there is nothing to entice you to stay. I love the PS3, the PSN store is fine, the browser is weak, but Home, is a disappointment.

Regarding the Wii/Second life reference, I stand by it. I was just talking about user interface and avatar custumization. Just like Second Life and the Sims are very similar themselves.

And, try and lay off the issue of notice for Sony purchases. I am not saying they did anything illegal, just saying IMO that charging 49 cents, no matter how much notice you get is stupid.

Home is a failure IMO, so far it sucks and I have no reason to visit yet. Notice I said yet. Sony needs to put more thought to it. The cafe is a good idea, as long as they have enough tables, the conversations allow more than 3 people at a time and there is no offer to purchase a 49 cent cup of virtual coffee....
