I don't have a problem viewing videos as such, so I believe the problem lies in the video itself. The video review for Neverwinter Nights shows me 9 seconds of what looks like recorded static. Please fix.

No-one seems to have mentioned Gaikai so far. I don't know what games it has to offer, but I'm certainly against paying OnLive's 15$ a month to be able to buy/play the games which I will additionally pay 40-50$ for. It just sounds ridiculous.

And yes, this brings up the whole 'Ubisoft DRM' issue again. People without rock-solid internet connections are out of luck, which means that if this technology is to change the world, it has to push for better internet connections in whatever way it can. I guess that if it really turns out to be that attractive, we would stop spending money on hardware and start spending cash on upgrading our internet connections.

I for one, am excited by this prospect. It transforms the PC into an all-in-one gaming platform.

There's zero evidence to support the notion that violence in games, excessive or otherwise, acts as a catalyst that compels consumers to purchase software rife with bloodshed. Look at the recent failings of games like MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill on the Wii; both of those games are excellent AND contain copious gore yet both perished at retail. The entire notion of gore being implemented to generate sales to "casuals" stems from the controversy of the original Mortal Kombat and the superior sales of the Genesis version versus the bloodless SNES version, which led Nintendo to allow MKII to be ported with the full spectrum of blood and viscera intact. This one incident alone is proof of nothing, especially since MK1 was a port of a game that was already popular, thus the expectation is that people wanted an approximation of the arcade experience and therefore chose the bloody version.

Also, the idea that gore and violence is included by developers/artists merely for the sake of generating sales is a crass generalization that also discounts the artistic and aesthetic choices many developers make when creating a game. When you really look at the most violent software on the market, most of it is appropriate when considering the context of the respective premises.

For example, God Of War is based on Greek mythology, which is incredibly graphic and violent.

Manhunt's entire premise centers around the concept of real snuff films and a voyeur, fetishistic-infused subculture where the protagonist is forced to either lay down and die or become as vicious as the monsters he is surrounded by and fight his way out.

THQ's Conan is also a gore-filled action game that perfectly emulates the look and feel of the character.

The examples go on…

If gory games make you ill or illicit uncomfortable feelings, don't play them. That is your right and I respect that.

What I don't respect is when you make a thread where you essentially foist your discontent unto the rest of us, basically stating: "I don't like this and you shouldn't like it either."

Your inability to understand why gore in games may be a necessary thematic or aesthetic decision is housed in your own superficial analysis of the topic, as evidenced by your examples.

F.E.A.R 2 was violent but so too was the original; L4D2 is also merely an extension of the sensibilities of the originalwhich isa zombie game to boot; AVP merely reflects the source material and I've already mentioned the logic behind GOW III's violence, which was also present in the first two iterations of the franchise. There is no trend; there are far more non-violent games than violent games on the market and the truly excessive titles really are few and far between.

Lastly, your question about gore being an American sensibility struck me as odd considering that plenty of ultra-violent games have been made by non-American studios.

Honestly, an answer to your question requires a cryptic response. You ask why and I would retort: Why not? While it is always possible that some of the violence we play in games was placed there for the purposes of shock value or marketing, that squeamish sensation you allude to might have also been the motivation behind the gore. If you don't like it don't play it but what I would caution you not to do is dismiss it outright merely because gore doesn't cater to your own personal tastes.

Grammaton-Cleric

To summarize, developers put it their 'cause they want to, and because they believe it suits the game. That makes sense. I was worried that it was driven by consumer demand and that soon all games would be bloodfests. As long as that's not the case, I'm fine. The reason I mentioned American in there is because, like I said, I thought the demand was consumer driven and since Americans drive most demand, I was wondering what the reasons for the trend were.

(Minor Spoiler) Zombie Island of Dr. Ned's final boss fight is in a lake of blood. And the 'Braains!' quest giver made me want to vomit.

This is a trend that I've been observing in a lot of games lately. More gore apparently = better. To cite a few examples, Borderlands, AVP, Left 4 Dead 2, FEAR 2, GOW 3 all take pride in the gore they dish out. I for one, find it a little disturbing. I don't really enjoy that much gore. I expect to see a little blood, when I shoot someone, but I don't expect my viewscreen to be showered with blood when I make a kill.

I'm just unable to understand why people love gore so much. Is this some sort of cultural development? I'm not American, so I may not see the trend as clearly as some of you do.

I guess some of us take the whole gaming thing a lot more seriously. I really can't conceptualize doing stuff like that.

Dead Space. 5 minutes into the game, when it becomes clear you're the only survivor, you have no clue what's happening, there are really scary and deadly aliens eerywhere, and you have no method of defending yourself,... Alt+F4, shudder, uninstall, go on with life. Don't like scary games.

I don't understand why people don't mind paying a monthly fee for xbox live when your really not getting anything too amazing but really detest the idea of paying to support a game that you love and will play for hours and hours.Dreamerdude26

Because

1) Some people actually prefer the individual RPG experience, and

2) The real reason why MMOs are becoming the norm is because game companies get more cash, on a regular basis. You can't rent or borrow an MMO from a friend and it's a deep investment over time, unlike the one-shot of a single player game.

That said, the only MMO I've played is WoW on trial, and I gave up quickly because I found it boring and thought it looked terrible. Maybe a good MMO will change my mind, but I'd take KOTOR 3 any day.

That being said, ME2 is quite a good game, and I'd argue that it is better than KOTOR is some ways, such as combat.masterpinky2000

That's precisely why I mentioned story. ME2 is a good game, very technically proficient, with great combat systems, but it disappointed me story-wise.

I wish there was hope for a 3rd installment of one of the best RPGs I ever played. It did everything right I feel slightly or completely missed by Mass Effect...Few "linear" and story driven games have had such a strong replay value for me.

If only...

wide_ocean

It's funny you should mention Mass Effect over there. After playing ME1, ME2 and KOTOR (In that order), I got the distinct feeling that ME had ripped significant bits of story out of KOTOR.

/*MASSIVE SPOILERS (KOTOR, ME1)

Sovereign was a big spaceship that corrupted your will and turned you over to his dominion. Sound anything like the Star Forge? The Protheans were an advanced race that was destroyed X years ago, well beyond history's reach. Again, the Rakatans. Huge fleet of Sith come in to destroy everyone, and so do the Reapers. They even borrowed the Harbinger term from KOTOR 2, though its meaning in ME2 hasn't been revealed yet.

SPOILER END*/

I was plain blown away by KOTOR. Even more so than Dragon Age, maybe. Dragon Age was unbelievably immersive and deep, but I believe KOTOR could have been Dragon Age and much more had it the technical proficiency and enormous funding of DAO.

Was really disappointed with ME2, story-wise. And even more so with the whole ME franchise after KOTOR.
